"Proper" historical documentation of the Pistols is kind of hard to get a feel for.....for a band who released only one "proper" album ("Bollocks"), there are tons and tons of recorded material out there, due to the fact that the Pistols were far more than a sum of their parts. A lot of the live material from the US 1978 tour is unlistenable, there are tons of alternate versions of most every track they ever laid down.....Die-hard Pistols fans may eat up some of the stuff in this post, more noncahlant fans might yawn and invoke the title "Beating a Dead Horse".....
I didn't wish to include a proper copy of "Bollocks", but when I discovered the Virgin Box Set, which contains it in its entirety and is on nice clean CD rather than scratchy old vinyl, I decided to go ahead and put up the box set......the album can be heard, as intended, along with more live and alternate versions than ANYONE would ever wish to hear.
"The Filth and the Fury" is a vinyl bootleg that I don't beleive I've ever see
n either online or as a CD before...good quality versions of the songs that were "Bollocks"....(How great WERE these songs? Well, subject to taste, but the album DOES contain "Holidays in the Sun", "Bodies", "Pretty Vacant", "Anarchy in the UK", and "God Save the Queen", all five of which I think we could agree were pretty much "classics" of the genre...I suppose I coulod have also included "New York" in which they "Faggot"-bait the New York Dolls, but I think Johnny Thunders paid that one back with interest with the classic "London Boys", wherein the Heartbreakers refer to the Pistols, as, well "faggots")
. So all in all, 5 or 6 good, lasting tracks on a debut album is not too bad a track record.....also some of the non-LP singles are decent material as well, the Pistols were not ENTIRELY style over substance.

US tour, as I said before most are fairly unlistenable....I'm mgoing to put up two of them, Atlanta 1/5/78 and Winterland 1978 (Winterland might have been their final show, I'd have to look but I don't care enough to)....I could post a few more of them if there were demand for them but I can see the redundnacy with repeatedly posting "different" versions of the same 12 or 13 songs........

Next is my favorite "curiosity", "Some Product".....be advised this album has next to NO actual music on it, it is a collection of radio interviews and such with the Pistols.....it is, in my opinion, rolling-on-the-floor hilarious, don't miss the "Big Tits Across America" segment, a call-in from a Kiss fan (of all people) (Pistols: "They can KISS my ass!") Hilarious stuff here.....and why not complete the freak show by adding Sid Viscious' "Too Fast To Live", as why not document the legacy of a pathetic character, literally to stupid to keep himself alive? I offer this album up as train-wreck material only, It is not likely to become one of your favorites.
Leave a comment, should you have something to say.....the links are in the comments section. I'll start the uploads this afternoon, hopefully the links will be totally up by tonight, if not, please check tomorrow!

thanks for this. I've heard a lot of Pistols boots from the US Tour and you're right, they tend to get redundant pretty quickly. Not to mention the quality is generally shite.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the Filth and the Fury, but never had a chance to give it a listen.
Check it out Akin, I uploaded the original vinyl version....don't think I've ever heard/seen a digital copy of it, it's probably my favorite Pistols boot....and if you are unfamiliar DO NOT miss "Some Product", it is out and out HILARIOUS!
ReplyDeleteCheers and hope you enjoy the blog/music
