Last year sometime I did a "Best Donnas post, ever"....which featured most of their fine albums (I think "Turn 21" , "Skintight", and "Spend the Night" were on there, as I think was "Teenage American Rock N Roll Machine" and probably some live stuff....not going to repost the "official" albums, if you're a Donnas fan, most certainly you have them. Besides that, I think the first Donnas album, and the abums that followed "Spend the Night" were pretty awful.....
But, I have a bunch of live albums, I don't recall what ones I put up last time so I'll just put all of em up, but my reason for this is that I DO remember last time I wanted to post, and could not find, a super-Donnas rarity, "Steal Your Lunch Money" (GREAT title) by the Electro-Cutes (Maybe the greatest band name EVER).....this was pre-Donnas, it's not like really great to listen to multiple times, but it is hard to find (my copy has since turned up). These babes nust have been about 14 or 15 when they made this one, so very interesting. As I said, the Donnas first album sucked, they didn't find their groove until the "Skintight" or a little before, and this was BEFORE that.....so don't expect an undiscovered gem. It's a curiosity, but a rare and damned interesting one.
The live albums run the spectrum pretty much, stuff from the early "Skintight" era, stuff from the bands commercial peak ("Spend the Night"), and also some more polished stuff from the "Gold Medal"/"Bitchin'" ....I'd have loved to have caught them live at one point or another, I remember a television performance that really kicked ass.
The Donnas were, at their peak, one of my favorite bands (for a short, 3-4 album run)...they were NOT the Runaways (much more talented )....I always thought they actually compared favorably with, of all people, the Ramones.....I think that the Ramones captured what it was like to be a young/teenage boy in the late 70's (I was one!), and I got the feeling that the Donnas summarized the same thing for young/teen chicks of the late 90's-early 00's if you get what I mean.
Some of these live discs were posted before, ignore them or enjoy them again.....this is some good stuff here, and the whole post is worth it for the Electro-Cutes album!

ReplyDeleteThanks, I love the Donnas as well, at least did when they were good....the first Donnas post last year was fairly well-received, but since I couldn't find the Electrocutes disc it just seemed incomplete. I listened to a couple of the boots today and the ones I listened to were AWFUL (sound quality wise) but I know there are some good ones in there too....usually I try to spot-check all the boots for quality but in this case I just upped every DOnnas boot I have, lazy yes, but, oh well....I know there are some good ones there too and the whole thing is worth it for the Electrocutes!
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame you never saw them live in their glory days. I saw them open for (I think) Megadeath in late '01. With that crowd- many of whom didn't know them- the fact that 3 of the 4 were megahot, their speed, and the cover of Judas Priest (Livin After Midnight) were the selling points.
ReplyDeleteI decided to go with the set from the Metro in Chicago, as that venue usually has good sounding boots.
I think all 4 of them were megahot, I assume you consider the big girl less than that, but I love me some big chicks too....it is the ultimate in respect for their musicianship that i DIDN'T make a lot of sexist comments about tehm as I generally do with female artists.....I'd tounge-bathe all 4 donnas in a heartbeat, but mentioning it I think somewhat detracts from the fact that I like their music....I did a post about Drain STH a while back, I think they sucked, but those babes were smokin', and the post was pretty much about 1) their album sucked, and 2) I'd do anyone of them without a seconds hesitation. If people think I'm a vile sexist womanizing pig, well, there are worse (and less accurate) things they could call me!
DeleteRight, Big Scott, I thought the bassist (big girl) was less than megahot, but she was certainly cute and I would do her. Indeed, the best LTR relationship I've ever had (11+ years and counting) was/is a very big girl and much better in bed than a lot of megahot chix.
ReplyDeleteHowever the 3 megahot ones were all ready to step into movies or TV if they so wanted, while the bassist would at least have required grooming or been willing to be more of a character actress.
What it comes down to, imo, is that words mean different things. Calling every sexually attractive female megahot weakens our language, which weakens our thinking, which weakens our actions. Just my 2 cents and I think commenting on their looks is fair game, just as it is for The Ramones.
