The Dickies, Part Five and OUT

These guys had a LOT of material, hopefully you have enjoyed what I've put up until now, this FIFTH part is going to clean up some loose ends, and should fill in any gaps in your Dickies collection.......they were a GREAT and under-appreciated band, as before I compare them to the Ramones, as they rocked it hard and fast AND had a wicked sense of HUMOR, which is so often forgotten about by those of us who take our rock n roll "SERIOUSLY, maaaaaaaaan!", Good God.

OK, so what is left? "All This and Puppets Stew" is another full-length, released in 2001, this was thier final full-length epic......OK, for me, it's not great, I'm trying to give you a FULL picture of these dudes, ANYONE who started out mid 1970's and was still at it in 2001, well, you give them credit, BUT how many ideas can they have left? Well, even though "Free Willy", "My Pop the Cop", "Whack the Dali Llama" and a few more are without a doubt amusing, to ME this ship had sailed, as it would with ANY band that had been at it this long........there's also (finally) a studio recording of "Nobody But Me".

The 7" "Free Willy" disc has a couple of tracks available as well on the "Puppets" release, I'll include it here if you are an obsessive completist.

Next up, we have an audio presentation of a live DVD, "Best of the Flipside Live",  from a vintage 1985 performance.....I highly recommend this one, these guys had "it" live and this is a good representation of thier live shows. Most of thier best known shit is here, and especially take note of the frantic encore of "Paranoid" (I always LOVED thier version of that tune for some reason)....this is worthwhile and (I think) kind of hard to locate in non-DVD version.

OK, "The Punk Singles Collection".....as everything here has already been presented in the earlier parts of this post, I really shouldn't, BUT (1) The Dickies WERE a great singles band, and (2) everyone isn't as huge a fan as myself, thus justifying the need for such a collection, which is nearly flawless......I'd like to hope that MOST of you, if unfamiliar, explore some of the other angles, but if you are a dabbler, you GOTTA at least have THIS, right? It's ALL here, and is greatly programmed and works wonderfully as a unified effort.

"The Dickies Go Bananas" is a recent (2007 or so, don't care enough to check) of a 2002 live performance....as I've said before, Stan Lee and company were a great live act, and although this ship had sailed, trust me, if they are a fave of yours, what ever could be wrong with hearing yet another version of "Paranoid" or "Nights in White Satin", they STILL bring a smile, and this disc features a guest appearance from Olga Toy Doll, performing his hit "Nellie the Elephant"....always SOMETHING of value with these blokes, all in all not a "great" LP, but, hey, you can't say I'm not laying them out there for ya, right?

"Live at the Masque" (Volume 3) is a find, part of a series of live stuff from the scene from that particular era........actually, the other bands featured here are more inteersting than the Dickies, to me, simply because they are less accessible.......tracks from Black Randy and the Metrosquad, The Eyes, and The Randoms are outstanding, not to sell our beloved Dickies short, but interesting/entertaining stuff.......anybody out there (calling Dave Sez or Andie James?) got the other two volums, I think they'd be a wonderful addition.

Oh, speaking of Andie James......he sends us (submitted in the comments a few days ago) 4 wonderful original singles with the original sleeve art, goddamn wonderful of him to contribute them to us to enjoy, you can graab them here  http://www88.zippyshare.com/v/c71bIrxX/file.html, and PLEASE check out his new (great, of course) blog where he posts a lot of his fine collection HERE:
http://tfgc1.blogspot.co.uk/, Thanks Andie, you are the fucking shit (dunno about the UK, in the USA this is a huge compliment, I'd hate for you and I to have another language confusion issue, ya know, English/English!)

OK, that's gonna about do it for the Dickies..... download numbers pretty good, but commentary/remarks not all that great......come on you guys, believe me that bloggers like me and Andie and Brian and ChrisGoes and Silent Way and ALL the others do this shit for YOU, because we wish to spread and share the music that we love.......when all we ask in return is a "I love this, thanks", or, just as welcome, a "This fucking sucks, what the hell is wrong with you?" it really doesn't seem like that high a price to pay......trust me, we all invest a lot of our time in this, it really IS quite a bit of effort, and it REALLY DOES mean much to us when you SPEAK UP and comment on what we are trying to do for the rest of the world.......as I said yesterday, I'll not stop, unless forced to somehow, because I think I have a sort of "duty" to do this, BUT some of the others may not feel the same way and simply throw up their hands and say "fuck it".......I've seen it happen 100 times and it will happen again.......we are a community, guys......bonded by our love of music, we do this as a TRUE "labor of love"..........please, please, please, if you sample any of the wares (here or on ANYONE else's site), at least be human enough to say "Thanks", or to say "Go Fuck Yourself", which, trust me, is better than simply acquiring the music we share and saying NOTHING. Thanks for reading and listening, love to everyone.

Got a LOT of stuff to do tonight, lets start with guested links

Been away from the computer this weekend and Monday for the most part, my son had a college visit, my
wife "celebrated" her 49th birthday, which, as always, fell on the date of my father's passing away (this being the 25th anniversary of it actually), so both a busy and emotional time.......I have enough guest posts and guest posted links to fill up a LOT of blog space and I'm gonna do it, Brian has part 4 of his amazing Swans post completed, Cliff gives us another reggae masterpiece, Apantabapanta has started a new, intersting, and unusual project which we will see, but first, let's continue the tradition I started a couple of weeks ago of bringing guests contributed links to the forefront......it came to my slow-witted attention that when one of my great friends like Andie James or Dave Sez  adds a valueable link to the comments section, it may go unnoticed as I shouldn't expect you folks to go back and re-read my comments sections each day......a couple weeks ago I brought a bunch of contributed links to the front page, I have no way to track the download numbers as they are technically not on MY Zippy account, but I don't care.....it makes it EASIER for you guys to get MORE quality music, and THAT is what I care about......btw, the response/reaction to my attempt to better highlight the contributed links was quite favorable, and it is something I will continue to do every couple of  weeks.......hey, I have good ideas sometimes, it just takes them a while to burst through all the sludge......(oh, you say "why is there a picture of former NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER JIM TRESSEL OF FORMER OHIO STATE GREATNESS pictured here? Well, because my son Grant's college visit was at Youngstown State, where Tressel is now the University President, I got to meet him and talk to him for a few minutes, which, to me, was a thrill, a privlege, an honor, and a pleasure, and I sure as HELL did thank him for teh great years at OSU, specifically the 2003 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

OK, first let's start with the last thing I posted, Saturday, the Mo-Dettes "The Story So Far".....my always eager to please friend Andie James comes through with THIS great comment and link:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Scott,

Four Mo-Dettes singles were also released and make up the bonus tracks on the 2008 Re-Issue of The Story So Far...

But that's no fun, so here are the four singles with cover scans

White Mice/Masochistic Opposite
Paint It Black/Bitta Truth
Dark Park Creeping/Two Can Play
Tonight/Waltz In Blue Minor

http://www31.zippyshare.com/v/gofnWE9t/file.html

Great stuff Andie, I have a vinyl single of "masochistic Opposites/White Mice Disco" here somewhere, finding it would be quite another issue.......again, you do a FANTASTIC job of supplementing my posts with stuff from your stash, which we will all see IN SPADES here in a minute........

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, a couple days before THAT, we did a post regarding Public Image Limited, it was quite popular, MUCH more so than I expected, and we had some great submissions to compliment the stuff from MY collection:

First my GREAT and generous friend Dave Sez contributes a pair of rare live Jah Wobble links, which if I were you I would RUN not walk to get these, very rare, very unique, and very great, thanks Dave!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Scott! Yuh, I also went off PiL when Jah Wobble left, but here's some rare goodies:

http://darkcircleroom4.blogspot.com/2012/09/jah-wobble-live-in-europe-1981-1983.html

http://darkcircleroom4.blogspot.com/2012/12/jah-wobble-larry-hideaway-toronto.html

Cheers, Dave Sez.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, in regard to PIL, my buddy simonthecat reminisced (as did I) about the look on Dick Clark's face as PIL performed on American bandstand, 1980........so, what the hell, I dug up a YouTube clip of it, here it is in all it's glory, have you never seen this, your life is lacking just a touch.......I STRONGLY recommend giving this a look if you are in the biz of "understanding" what PIL were trying to "accomplish" at the time.....

https://m.youtube.com/?#/watch?v=_u17pbdySQ8

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And one more HUGE contribution from Andie James.......I'll let him explain it to you, but this is as close as we can get to the original vinyl recordings of the classic "Metal Box", YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS, I am not kidding, this is an amazing sonic listening experience.....DO NOT contact me a year from now asking me to re-up this, get it NOW, it is almost impossible to find in this format and is a MUST HEAR experience.......Please, please, please, if you have never heard the original recordings, here is your chance and I advise you take it on........Andie, again, you are the MAN, and I mean that, of course, in multiple meanings (in case you don't know the story, I once thought Andie was a chick, and he was cool enough to have a sense of humor about it rather than get pissed as so many would......a great DUDE Andie james is, and this is a SOLID GOLD contribution, again, don't miss this one:

Hi Scott,
Please excuse me while I blow your ears clean off...

Ripped from a triple 12" vinyl set released on Virgin Records (METAL 1) in 1979 to high resolution and high quality lossless 24-96000 FLAC audio then converted for playback to MP3 @ 320kbps

http://www45.zippyshare.com/v/NVA19V63/file.html

The full FLAC file is 1.2GB and Zippy completely freaked out, but this amazing rip at 320 is sonically awesome in comparison to my CD rip...

This is Scott, again, and once again, do not underestimate how badly you REALLY DO want to hear this, quite an experience for what is normally a high dollar collector's item..........

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, next up, Comedy/Soundtrack afficianado Brian Parker was pondering what he should do for his next post.......anyway, someone asked for some Martin Mull (I personally do not have much of a comedy stash, really other than what I've gotten the last few months from Brian), anyway, the SPECIFIC Mull recording that was requested wasn't in Brian's arsenal, however, he did contribute a vinyl rip of "Sex and Violins" (I know NOTHING about it, I'll defer to his judgement, which on comedy recordings hasn't let us down yet (fantastic Firesign Theater and Lenny Bruce stuff notably, and more, so logically this is likely a winner as well:

Sorry, the only Martin Mull I have is on vinyl. I did find this rip of Sex & Violins though...

http://www27.zippyshare.com/v/26751160/file.html

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, that is it for THIS post, but NOT for tonight, by a long shot.......I have a gaggle of guest posts (FULL posts, not just link submissions) that will rattle your gums, trust me.........but for now, enjoy these fabulous links, if you pick off any (or all) of them, PLEASE thank Andie james, Dave Sez, or Brian Parker, or all three, they are all GREAT friends of this blog and REALLY help to expand the spectrum of stuff I can help to provide and share!

A Bunch of Links from Andie James and others you may have missed

Often, generous readers, contributors add links in the comments section, additional or related things that I myself can't provide...... in general, I haven't called enough attention to these, I am not going to do that anymore, it may cause you to miss out on something you'd really like (who the hell goes back and reads the comments more than once..... in the future I will bring ALL contributed links to the front page in order to better fulfill my mission, which of course is TO SHARE as much stuff as possible.....

What caused me to think about this was that Andie James, a longtime friend and contributor (who I once thought was a chick, right Andie?) has contributed a LOT of cool stuff the last week or two, and I want to make sure that if they are for you, you don't miss them.......I'll add his comments in full so you can get his opinion of what he is sharing, thanks again to everyone who shares stuff, I am always looking to improve things around here and I think moving all contributed links to the front page will be an improvement, sorry for not thinking of it earlier, I am old.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(In response to the "No Future Collection")

Thanks for this Scott, always was a big fan of No Future Records and I've got three of their best for you here.

(apologies for the piss poor bit rate but I've never found a decent copy)

The Violators - The No Future Years (@ 320)

Blitz - Voice Of A Generation (@ 320)
http://www7.zippyshare.com/v/kSNJSp5d/file.html

I'm just uploading a vinyl rip of Blitz's second album Second Empire Justice in FLAC and four 7" singles that I'll post links to later

----------------------------------------------

Also re: "No Future":
Three 7" 45rpm single rips from the Second Empire Justice album and a limited edition 33rpm red vinyl 7" EP re-issue of Warriors.

Telecommunication 7" (@ 320)
New Age 7" (@ 320)
Solar 7" (@ 320)
Warriors 7" EP (@ 320)

http://www7.zippyshare.com/v/Y8h7wqR8/file.html

------------------------------------------------

And also from "No Future":

Blitz's second album Second Empire Justice is a long way away from their opening salvo of Oi! Punk. This is a distinct change of course into the realms of New Wave/SynthPop with Post Punk most definitely in the Post. Recorded at Stockport's iconic Strawberry Studios with in-house engineer Chris Nagle assuming production duties (Nagle cut his teeth working alongside Martin Hannett - see Joy Division Unknown Pleasures). Given the factoryesque sleeve design, any assumptions that Blitz wanted a particular Mancunian aura to the album are just that. When you listen to the record, you may likely assume the same. Nagle's production style certainly echoes that of his mentor as Second Empire Justice is much cleaner sounding with layered atmospherics adding depth, but still with a good few delayed snares thrown in for good measure. You will notice (and probably love) how robust the bass guitar is in the mix - just imagine a cross between JJ Burnel and Peter Hook cranked up really loud. Tracks like Underground, White Man and Skin are bass hungry monsters, Acolyte and Flowers & Fire lean more to new-wave. Into The Daylight and Telecommunication delve into classic eighties goth-synth territory. Readers will not be surprised to know that Blitz's original Oi! Punk following hated it.

Ripped from a vinyl album released on Future Records (FL 1) in 1983 to high quality lossless flac audio.
A1 Flowers & Fire
A2 Underground
A3 Acolyte
A4 Into The Daylight
A5 Telecommunication
B1 White Man
B2 For You
B3 Skin
B4 H.M.K. Grey

the password for dantzig twist is: oldschoolfrenchpunkrock where are ya big scott..............thought you'd dig these.

(these are great and also quite hard to find, highly recommended-Scott)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andie James also loaded on a BUNCH of Psychedelic Furs stuff:

On Love Spit Love's eponymous debut, Richard Butler tried too hard to break from the legacy of the Psychedelic Furs, and the result was a stiff, awkward record that only ccasionally hit its target. For Love Spit Love's second album, Trysome Eatone, Butler decided to rely on the darkly seductive blend of arty post-punk and glam-rock that was the Furs' trademark. It's partially nostalgia, but he was able to update the Furs sound with a sharp, clever production and the occasional electronic or alternative flourish. It evokes the '80s without slavishly recreating the sound, but Trysome Eatone manages to be more than a guilty pleasure for longtime Furs fans because of Butler's solid craftmanship. Many of the album's songs are well-written and memorable, resulting in a record that represents a return to form for one of the early '80s' most distinctive artists.

“Pretty In Pink” originally released in 1981 as a single from the band’s second album, Talk Talk Talk. The song inspired the 1986 film of the same name and a re-recorded version of the song was included on the film’s soundtrack.

Allmusic writer Bill Janovitz credits 1981 producer Steve Lillywhite for finding “the ideal sound for the band, with a perfect blend of classic pop, punk, and art rock elements”. Janovitz called it “the definitive take” of the song.

The 1986 version Janovitz described this version as “ho-hum, streamlined, (and) radio-ready”.

I've included 3 12" singles
1. Pretty In Pink (1986)
2. Danger (Remix) (1982)
3. The Ghost In You (1984) all @ 320
