New Wave Hits of the 1980's Part 3 and OUT!

WHOA, just watched the Cincinnati Bengals (NOT my team, you know I am a Vikings fan) GIFT WRAP and willingly hand over a playoff game to a divisional rival, I REALLY don't think I've ever seen a game, especially a playoff game, have that type of an ending, I don't care what they do, but if I were running that organization, I'd say to myself, "How can YOU NOT fire a coach who cannot keep his team from acting like thuggish fools with 2 minutes to go in maybe the franchise's most important game in 20 years or so?"...... well, these things are not for ME to decide, and, tomorrow, after the Seahawks thump the Vikings, we'll all be in the same boat, but I HOPE the Vikings simply lose because they are the lesser team, not because they make a door-prize gift out of the game as did Cincinnati...... .that team should be ashamed of themselves.

Moving on, as this is not a sports blog, lets get back to this New Wave 1980's multi-disc set, we've been through 12 discs and we have 5 more to go, as I've made clear I have VERY mixed feelings about this set, I think it contains a bit too much "obvious" material (although, as acknowledged, much of it is very good/essential), however, I think there is a good bit of more esoteric material as well, all in all, I think it pretty nearly accomplishes what it set out to do, just curious as to the near TOTAL absence of much of ANY "punk" related stuff, I am assuming it was intentional.

So, let us advance to my much awaited views on the remaining discs.....Volume 13 leads off with, of ALL things, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's abysmal "Relax", but other than that, this is a pretty good collection. Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days' was a good one, we get a track from the WAY too rarely comped Bus Boys, plus Echo & the Bunnymen, Ultravox, and the Bangles are bands of the era that are certainly representative. (Confession: until maybe a year ago, I thought the lyric to "Dance Hall Days" was "we were cool on Christ", when it is actually "we were cool on craze".......fuck you.)

So , shall we investigate Disc 14? I always really liked (for SOME reason?) After the Fire's "Der Kommisar", we also get some Art of Noise, Colour Field, Let's Active....... all either good OR fairly rarely comped tracks, a worthwhile disc.

The final "regular" disc of the set is Disc 15 (hold on, there is more) has some good stuff on it (one would guess they had run out of "obvious" material by now, myself, I'd MUCH rather hear the lesser-known stuff than the stuff I already have on ten comps)...... I always liked "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves (shut up), and there is some fairly out there tracks on this one.....Strawberry Switchblade, Scritti Politti, Lords of the New Church..... hey, if you've hung out THIS long, you will probably be wanting this one, too, without any description from me......

OK, there are a three OTHER discs to this set..... aside from the "official" 15 volumes.... these "other" three discs DO contain some overlap with the previous discs in the set, but there IS (trust me) enough worthwhile stuff here that you'll want to investigate.....as I've said all along on this one, program as suits your needs! First up, I guess we'll call it "Volume 16", is "New Wave Women", of COURSE I am going to love THAT just for its title, but, check this out..... Berlin's awesome "Sex (I'm A.......)" (hey I know a lotta people hate that song. Fuck you it's great), The Divinyls wondersome female masturbation ode "I Touch Myself", The Eurythmics? Lene Lovich? The Pandoras? sounds essential to me........

Next up (we'll call Volume 17) is New Wave Xmas......... lotta good ones turn up here, DAMN I wish I woulda located this one a month ago, but there are still some great tracks here,  we get XTC, that bizarre David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet on "Peace On Earth"/"Little Drummer Boy", Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band's "Xmas at K-Mart", Squeeze, Throwing Muses, The Pretenders......... we can forgive a little bit of overlap for all THAT right?

OK, the final, 18th disc of this series is New Wave Halloween ....arguably the best disc of teh series (for some reason, this stuff melds really well with goth-type-stuff), it opens with "The Time Warp" from the "Rocky Horror Picture Show", which is wonderful, we get the fantastic (and NEVER comped) MX-80 Sound, as well as the great Ministry, we have Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dream Syndicate (IMO their best track, "Halloween"), Dead Kennedys and Roky Erikson & the Aliens.... if that isn't enough for ya you be on the wrong blog.

OK, wanted to get THIS set done, I have a BUNCH of ideas/drafts in reserve that I want to share with ya before I gotta go back to work....... really, been working hard to try to compile some things that I hope are of interest to you, and of course, as, always, I want to thank my guest posters, they are wonderful, and give the blog a more multi-layered personality, rather than just reflecting MY OWN (boring) personality.

Go Vikings........ a fan since 1969, WIN OR LOSE......... look out in 2016!

Hope you've enjoyed this big ol set, I have some more ideas for stuff I wanna do the next couple weeks, I hope I can get em all done....... I am the kind of person that "starts" 30 projects at once and finishes them....... well, whenever..... I do take a BIT of pride in the blog though, and I TRY to (along with my wonderful contributors), to keep it fresh, DIFFERENT, and something you can't see on every share blog.....believe it or not, I DO THIS STUFF FOR YOU GUYS, even those who hate me and call me names and don't even understand what I am doing here....AT LEAST I made them THINK, at least for a MINUTE, and maybe that is ALL i can contribute.

In a posting mood, don't be surprised if I post tomorrow and a few days next week, I have so many ideas I want to put out there....I  know Brian is working on a great project too, I won't tell you what it is, But WOW it's going to be badass when he gets it done.....

Come on VIKINGS........ just don't embarrass me and we'll be fine........ this team went 11-5 with maybe 9-7 talent...... as I've been saying all along, 2016/17 THAT is the target, not 2015...... should they lose to Seattle 56-0, as long as they make maximum effort to ensure the next couple of years, I, as a fan of the team, will overwhelmingly approve of the job they have done this season...... AND, imagine, by some chance, they were to WIN tomorrow? Doubtful, but it would be one of the biggest wins in the history of the franchise!

1980's New Wave Hits, Part 2

Well, picking up where we left off before, we have a few more discs of the great, semi-great, and not so great new-wave singles of the 1980's..... a few have pointed out that some of these are actually from the late 1970's, as a member of the class of 1979 I am quite aware of this, I think they were pretty much capturing a moment, in particular with how all over the map this set has been, style and quality wise.

Disc 7 is, of the set, perhaps the most esoteric set of stuff, dragged down only by Trio's awful "Da Da Da".... Josie Cotton makes a welcome return, The Blasters, Fleshtones, Joe "King" Carrasco and the Crowns, and Bill Nelson are all acts that, it seems to me, don't come up on these type comps too often.

Disc 8 returns to more layup material, not that some of it isn't really good..... Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen" is a great one-shot, "Mexican Radio" from Wall of Voodoo is a great one, and The Fixx' "Red Skies" is one I hadn't heard in a while. There are a few dogs, however, from the WAY-past-their-peak Tubes ("She's a Beauty"), Thomas Dolby ("She Blinded Me With Science"), and the wretched "Goodbye to You" from Scandal......not to be too critical, though, as any set which includes the wonderful Rachel Sweet ("Voo Doo") can't be all bad.

Next up the ninth volume of the set leads off with Duran Duran's great "Rio", also great stuff from Psychedelic Furs, Killer Pussy ("Teenage Enema Nurses in Bondage"), Single Bullet Theory, and Echo & the Bunnymen's great "The Cutter".... I suppose "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo had to turn up here somewhere, so here it is.

By the time we get to Volume 10, in my opinion, the quality (overall) is beginning to decline..... the Adam Ant track is not a good one, Taco's awful "Puttin' on thte Ritz" and really nondescript material from Flock of Seagulls, Bow Wow Wow and others, the main saving grace of the set is "China" from the Red Rockers.

The Fixx ("One Thing Leads to Another") and Nena ("99 Luftballoons") are my personal faves on disc 11, and there is also less-common tracks from Joboxers, the Flirts, and Fun Boy Three..... pretty good set of some of the more esoteric material comped here.

We'll wrap this up with Disc 12 for today, leading off with Culture Club ("Karma Chameleon", ugh) gives kind of a picture of what we're in for here.....pretty  nondescript set, the saving grace being The Alarm's "Sixty Eight Guns", on of the very few selections in the set that venture over into more "punk" type material.

OK, that is all for today, I'll get the rest up tomorrow or so. Hopefully it's 20 below zero in Minnesota Sunday, sorry, if you live there, but I think a tortuously cold game is the only way I see the Vikings being able to even remain in a game with the Seahawks........ prediction: Seattle 28, Minnesota 10...... also prediction: Vikings in 2016 kick serious ass!

New Wave Hits of the 80's (Part 1)

Well, I thought I'd put out a nice big, comprehensive, multi-part compilation for ya for the New Year...... This is a tricky one, "New Wave Hits of the 1980's".... OK, a few things.... one, this is not really my favorite of all music scenes, "new wave" was a fairly all encompassing term for stuff that was "edgy" (to ANY degree) in the late 70's-80's..... A LOT of this music here is of the layup variety, ie, EASY selections that most of ya probably have in your stash already, should you enjoy this kind of thing....... there are 17 discs here, and, trust me, there is a LOT of stuff you already have....... now, on the positive side, the obvious stuff IS really good, so if you are lacking in some of this stuff, here is the spot.

I guess what we'll do here is take a gander at each disc, maybe point out the gems on each, and even give a shout to the obvious material that is here, given that, while it IS essential, it is also, for the most part, REALLY great shit........

Well, let's look at Disc 1.... as I've said, there is some layup material here.....but, it IS , in fairness, GREAT stuff....... Graham Parker's "Local Girls", The Ramones "Rock N Roll High School", and Blondie's "One Way Or Another", while all CLASSIC songs, have been comped to death..... the gems here are The Suburban Lawns great "Gidget Goes to Hell", Tim Curry's fab " I Do the Rock" (from of course, the Rocky Horror Picture Show), and Normal's "Warm Leatherette"..... some good stuff there, most of these discs will follow that pattern......program as you wish, you can probably pare this down to maybe 2 discs of stuff you don't already have 20 different times.... I must be sure and warn you that The Inmates' awful cover of "Dirty Water" is here as well.

Disc 2 is similar, the filler stuff is GREAT (Martha & the Muffins "Echo Beach", The Boomtown Rats "I Don't Like Mondays",  "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors and more..... see what I'm saying? GREAT material, but who the hell doesn't already have it?   Luckily, we got stuff from Human Sexual Response, Fischer-Z, and Klark Kent, for those searching for some less-comped stuff...

Let us advancd to disc 3...... again, OBVIOUS (but still great)  tracks from XTC, Gary Numan, and The Romantics (I bet you can guess which tracks without my assistance), but the "lesser-comped" stuff is fab as hell...... my fave here is The Nails "44 Lines About 88 Women", but we also get "Are You Ready For the Sex Girls?" from the Gleaming Spires, and The Fools' "It s a Night For Beautiful Girls"...... this disc, with its combination of moderately obscure comp tracks and standout "obvious" material, makes this a disc that can nearly stand on its own.

And here we go to disc 4...... I've always LOVED The Kings' "Switching to Glide", don't know, honestly, how often it's been comped, but it's a fantastic tune, one of the most representative of the era and sound.  Bauhaus turn in a weird cover of "Ziggy Stardust", Duran Duran contribute another obvious-but-still-great track ("Girls On Film"), we also get some gems from The Motors, The Members, and the Monroes, among others, as the set starts to veer away from the big "obvious" "hits", and tries to go a bit deeper..... btw, if you are not familiar with the one-shot wonder "Switching to Glide", DO NOT miss it, to me it represents the music of the early 80's to perfection.

So, Disc 5...... hey, I LOVE Kim Wilde's "Kids In America", Gang of Four's "I Love a Man In Uniform", and Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy, but as I said before, do we all REALLY need ANOTHER copy of them?...... luckily, we are left with stuff like Pete Shelley's "Homosapien", Japan's "The Art of Parties", and Great Buildings "Hang on to Something".....there are also TOTALLY obvious throwaways from Toni Basil, Marshall Crenshaw (not well-comped, just always hated this song, strictly personal), and Frank and Moon Zappa's "not great" "Valley Girl"........ program as you wish, as I said before, I am but the middle man!

So, for today, we will wrap up with Disc 6...... first of all Golden Earring? enough said there, "People Who Died" is maybe Jim Carroll's weakest track, and, really?, Culture Club?....... well, anyway, it IS a representative cross section, be that good or bad, and they throw in some goodies as well, this time from X ("White Girl", an old fave of mine), Josie Cotton ("Johnny Are You Queer?"), and "Wot" from Captain Sensible....... a good mix of the obvious and the (fairly) obscure......

OK, hope you blokes like this stuff...... in the next few days, I'll get the rest of the set posted..... it's kind of infuriating that the obvious stuff is SO obvious it belongs on "K-Tel's New Wave Hits of the 80's", while some of the obscure stuff is both unique and wonderful....... on this one, I can't stress enough: program it as you wish to suit YOUR needs.

Check back the next few days, there are like 9 MORE discs and I'm sure you will find a few gems if you search..... while 80's new-wave is not exactly my FAVORITE genre, it WAS a great singles-medium, ala punk or power pop, or 60's garage psych, as it makes for FANTASTIC, comprehensive compilations, as (I have made this point before) it plays like a great radio show (does not work for, say Krautrock, stoner, metal, and other formats that don't exactly work in the singles format..... .love it or leave it, no one can argue that some great singles did come out of this format/era....

HHHHEEEEEEY Now, come on! Your Uncle is laid off for a while, and has a bunch of ideas for
some upcoming posts......along with my team of wondersome contributors, the next few months on the blog oughta be pretty great...... this is a BIG project, 16 or 17 discs or whatever, but I DO like stuff like this, HUGE sets that attempt, one way or another, to give a comprehensive look at a sound/era......

GUYS, please tell me if you like this stuff or not.....a nd if NOT, what would you prefer? My mission here has ALWAYS been, for anyone who reads/participates/listens here to be able to construct, for him or herself, the PERFECT music collection.... there shouldn't, in this day and age, be ANYTHING out there that you wish to hear, and can't........ just let us know what you'd like and chance are good that ONE of the team just may be able to help you out!

Love to all, as always.......I think the Vikings have about as much chance of beating Seattle next week as I have of Drew Barrymore accepting my latest marriage proposal, but hey, ya never know......

Tune in the next couple days to get the rest of this "new wave" treasure-trove!
