New Wave Hits of the 1980's Part 3 and OUT!

WHOA, just watched the Cincinnati Bengals (NOT my team, you know I am a Vikings fan) GIFT WRAP and willingly hand over a playoff game to a divisional rival, I REALLY don't think I've ever seen a game, especially a playoff game, have that type of an ending, I don't care what they do, but if I were running that organization, I'd say to myself, "How can YOU NOT fire a coach who cannot keep his team from acting like thuggish fools with 2 minutes to go in maybe the franchise's most important game in 20 years or so?"...... well, these things are not for ME to decide, and, tomorrow, after the Seahawks thump the Vikings, we'll all be in the same boat, but I HOPE the Vikings simply lose because they are the lesser team, not because they make a door-prize gift out of the game as did Cincinnati...... .that team should be ashamed of themselves.

Moving on, as this is not a sports blog, lets get back to this New Wave 1980's multi-disc set, we've been through 12 discs and we have 5 more to go, as I've made clear I have VERY mixed feelings about this set, I think it contains a bit too much "obvious" material (although, as acknowledged, much of it is very good/essential), however, I think there is a good bit of more esoteric material as well, all in all, I think it pretty nearly accomplishes what it set out to do, just curious as to the near TOTAL absence of much of ANY "punk" related stuff, I am assuming it was intentional.

So, let us advance to my much awaited views on the remaining discs.....Volume 13 leads off with, of ALL things, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's abysmal "Relax", but other than that, this is a pretty good collection. Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days' was a good one, we get a track from the WAY too rarely comped Bus Boys, plus Echo & the Bunnymen, Ultravox, and the Bangles are bands of the era that are certainly representative. (Confession: until maybe a year ago, I thought the lyric to "Dance Hall Days" was "we were cool on Christ", when it is actually "we were cool on craze".......fuck you.)

So , shall we investigate Disc 14? I always really liked (for SOME reason?) After the Fire's "Der Kommisar", we also get some Art of Noise, Colour Field, Let's Active....... all either good OR fairly rarely comped tracks, a worthwhile disc.

The final "regular" disc of the set is Disc 15 (hold on, there is more) has some good stuff on it (one would guess they had run out of "obvious" material by now, myself, I'd MUCH rather hear the lesser-known stuff than the stuff I already have on ten comps)...... I always liked "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves (shut up), and there is some fairly out there tracks on this one.....Strawberry Switchblade, Scritti Politti, Lords of the New Church..... hey, if you've hung out THIS long, you will probably be wanting this one, too, without any description from me......

OK, there are a three OTHER discs to this set..... aside from the "official" 15 volumes.... these "other" three discs DO contain some overlap with the previous discs in the set, but there IS (trust me) enough worthwhile stuff here that you'll want to investigate.....as I've said all along on this one, program as suits your needs! First up, I guess we'll call it "Volume 16", is "New Wave Women", of COURSE I am going to love THAT just for its title, but, check this out..... Berlin's awesome "Sex (I'm A.......)" (hey I know a lotta people hate that song. Fuck you it's great), The Divinyls wondersome female masturbation ode "I Touch Myself", The Eurythmics? Lene Lovich? The Pandoras? sounds essential to me........

Next up (we'll call Volume 17) is New Wave Xmas......... lotta good ones turn up here, DAMN I wish I woulda located this one a month ago, but there are still some great tracks here,  we get XTC, that bizarre David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet on "Peace On Earth"/"Little Drummer Boy", Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band's "Xmas at K-Mart", Squeeze, Throwing Muses, The Pretenders......... we can forgive a little bit of overlap for all THAT right?

OK, the final, 18th disc of this series is New Wave Halloween ....arguably the best disc of teh series (for some reason, this stuff melds really well with goth-type-stuff), it opens with "The Time Warp" from the "Rocky Horror Picture Show", which is wonderful, we get the fantastic (and NEVER comped) MX-80 Sound, as well as the great Ministry, we have Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dream Syndicate (IMO their best track, "Halloween"), Dead Kennedys and Roky Erikson & the Aliens.... if that isn't enough for ya you be on the wrong blog.

OK, wanted to get THIS set done, I have a BUNCH of ideas/drafts in reserve that I want to share with ya before I gotta go back to work....... really, been working hard to try to compile some things that I hope are of interest to you, and of course, as, always, I want to thank my guest posters, they are wonderful, and give the blog a more multi-layered personality, rather than just reflecting MY OWN (boring) personality.

Go Vikings........ a fan since 1969, WIN OR LOSE......... look out in 2016!

Hope you've enjoyed this big ol set, I have some more ideas for stuff I wanna do the next couple weeks, I hope I can get em all done....... I am the kind of person that "starts" 30 projects at once and finishes them....... well, whenever..... I do take a BIT of pride in the blog though, and I TRY to (along with my wonderful contributors), to keep it fresh, DIFFERENT, and something you can't see on every share blog.....believe it or not, I DO THIS STUFF FOR YOU GUYS, even those who hate me and call me names and don't even understand what I am doing here....AT LEAST I made them THINK, at least for a MINUTE, and maybe that is ALL i can contribute.

In a posting mood, don't be surprised if I post tomorrow and a few days next week, I have so many ideas I want to put out there....I  know Brian is working on a great project too, I won't tell you what it is, But WOW it's going to be badass when he gets it done.....

Come on VIKINGS........ just don't embarrass me and we'll be fine........ this team went 11-5 with maybe 9-7 talent...... as I've been saying all along, 2016/17 THAT is the target, not 2015...... should they lose to Seattle 56-0, as long as they make maximum effort to ensure the next couple of years, I, as a fan of the team, will overwhelmingly approve of the job they have done this season...... AND, imagine, by some chance, they were to WIN tomorrow? Doubtful, but it would be one of the biggest wins in the history of the franchise!

Some Christmas Music for the REST of us

OK, it is currently Sunday night, 12/20/25 at 12:11 as I type this.......I have just polished off 20 or so Michelob Ultras, a BIG handful of Kratom caps.and a buddy's home grown  redi-bud, and I am wanting to post somethubg KICKASS for the holidays... I'm hoping  that my regular assistants continue to comtibute OFTEN (their stuff is generally more interesting than my own,,anyway), but as I will be of work for a couple months, I can do me some FULL TIME BLLLLLOOOOGGGGIN!!!!!!!

All of my blog-friends have chipped in with their own Christmas contributions, so, I thought it was about time I did so as well... and HERE it is! Some of these may have been posted before, you know, if you know ME, that I am FAR too lazy to check on that, so MAYBE we'll get you a brand new Christmas experience, or MAYBE we won't!

OK, rock and Christmas, not always the greatest mix.....it's always fun to think of the non-novelty Christmas rock songs that don't flat out suck, anyone for The Pretenders' "2000 Miles"? The Who's "Tommy Doesn't Know What Day it Is"? The Kinks "Father Christmas"? Two I always love to point out are "Brick" by Ben Folds Five, which, although it takes place the day AFTER Christmas, is one of the most depressing songs ever written (It's about taking his girlfriend to get an abortion if you didn't know), and Elliott Smith's "Kings Crossing", because it gives a bleak shout out to the season ("It's Christmas time, and the needle's on the tree, a skinny Santa is bringing something for me, his voice is overwhelming, and his speech is slurred, and I only understand every other word..."), and it IS THE most depressing song ever written, witnessed by the fact that he killed himself somewhat after it's appearance (not that the rest of his stuff was exactly The Bonzo Dog Band or anything)....

OK, Christmas comps, I have a handful and I don't know which I've put up before and which I haven't, lets just grab a handful and see what happens....I know I HAVE posted "A Santa Cause: A Punk Rock Christmas" before and it was kind of popular, lots of oddball stuff here, right off the bat The AKA's cover Run DMC's "Christmas in Hollis", Fall Out Boy, Something Corporate, Mighty Mighty Bosstones all check in as some of the better known acts, also off the wall bands such as Punchline, Saosin, and a wrap up hidden track "Santa Has a Mullet" from Nerf Herder......I'm pretty sure there is a Volume 2 of this, but I am not sure if I have it or not, I'll try to locate it and if anyone has a share, that's what the season be all about.

I found a Torrent on the Bay, "Punk Rock Christmas Songs", dominated by seven tracks from Bowling For Soup, also Fear's legendary "Fuck Christmas", The Ramones "Merry Christmas", as well as a bunch of overlap with the above mentioned "Santa Cause" set. This, like many homemade Torrent projects, programs it's material in alphabetical order, so you combine these two sets and program them however you like, I'll take this over the normal stuff we are bombarded with each December.

I ran across this one recently, not EXACTLY my cup, but some may fancy this, "A Rock N Roll Christmas".....the highlight is Bob Seger and the Last Heard with "Sock It To Me Santa", alongside a total mishmash of The Moody Blues, ELP, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Squire, and others, topped by the Kink's aforementioned "Father Christmas".......this likely contains, at least, something you've not heard before.

Lastly, and LESS my cuppa than that, is a new (2015) set, "A Southern Rock Christmas".... ."Southern Rock" as we think of it (Marshall Tucker, stuff like that), never did THAT much for me, but if you DO like it, how about The Outlaws, Charlie Daniels, Blackfoot (always did like them, at least their first album "Strikes!" for some reason), Black Oak Arkansas and more......I gave it a quick listen, actually pleasantly surprised.

So, if I don't talk to you again, (I might) before Christmas, hope you and your family have a fantastic one, also, if celebrate Haunikah (I'm sure I bombed THAT spelling!), or whatever, BigScott62, BigCarla66, and BigGrant97 (did I mention he was accepted into the honors program at the University of Akron next year? Proud Daddy here!), and the entire team at Growing Bored For a Living all wish each and every one of you all the best, and a great year in 2016 as well!

Please, please, continue to comment, (comments that flame the material I post are welcome, name-calling, not as much, but I still don't delete those either, say whats on your mind), read, submit (I LOVE guest material), and share......also, if there is something you want, the only way I'll know is if you request it!

Thanks for sticking with the blog, entertaining the discriminating music lover now for over a TWENTIETH of a CENTURY!

Cliff presents a Reggae Christmas

(Scott): another great holiday contribution from another of our regular contributors, listened to a portion of this one last night and thought it was really good, can't wait to hear the rest of it.......I'll personally try to get something together for a Christmas post this week!
---------------------------------------------
TROJAN CHRISTMAS BOX SET
At the outset I will state I am not a great one for Christmas. Living in the UK, as I do,  I have usually had my fill of the festive period being shoved down my throat by the beginning of December. But our main man Scott said he was going to put up some Christmas posts so I thought I may as well offer some Reggae versions,  although there are also a few Ska and Rocksteady numbers included in this 50 song, 3 disc set. I have to be honest I don’t feel that Reggae and Christmas songs are entirely compatible bed fellows and some of these tracks will have you either saying “what the fuck?” or rapidly reaching for the skip button. However there are some pretty decent tracks scattered among the 3 discs. Like I had to  though you will have to listen through the whole thing to find them, I’m not gonna tell yer. But one word of advice listening to this is done best in small batches, don’t try to listen to it all in one go; you have been warned.

Jonder's Christmas Contributiion

(Scott)-Thanks to Jonder for these slabs, should be great both in the full-length and abbreviated

versions..... I SWEAR I'm gonna try and get a Christmas comp put together....TRY at least....I SWEAR I cannot wait for layoff (3 more days)...... anyway, take it away Jonder and tell us all about your latest creation......

-----------------------------------------------------

Every December I listen to the three volumes of "Christmas Present", a series released in the early 90's by Sister Ruby Records in Atlanta (www.discogs.com/label/534898-Sister-Ruby)

Unless you lived in the ATL back then, you probably haven't heard many of these musicians. You might remember Shawn Mullins' hit "Rockabye". If you're a fan of Sugarland, you'll recognize the names Kristian Bush and Kristen Hall. And somehow the guys at Sister Ruby got a contribution by a band from of out of town called Hootie and the Blowfish, before they signed to a major label.

Perhaps you recall the infamous Coolies, who made a Simon & Garfunkel covers album called Dig,
followed by a concept album called Doug. The breakup of the Coolies spawned several groups included here: the Ottoman Empire, Donkey, and the Mighty Fine Slabs. And if you've seen the movie "Benjamin Smoke", you'll appreciate "Little Drummer Boy".

Kelly Hogan (from the Jody Grind and the Rock*A*Teens) is still a solo artist, as well as Neko Case's singing partner. Anne Richmond Boston sang for the Swimming Pool Q's. Ani Cordero from #1 Family Mover later fronted the band Cordero.

The guitarist on "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" is the late Gregory Smalley (who created Atlanta's annual Bubbapalooza festival, and who was the inspiration for "The Living Bubba" by the Drive-By Truckers). And I think Rick Richards from the Georgia Satellites plays on "Run Rudolph Run".

Some of the songs aren't anything special, but there are great moments and real talent in each volume.  Some of these tracks are the only recordings of bands long forgotten by any but the most grizzled denizens of Cabbagetown and Little Five Points. Aside from the usual Christmas standards, there are covers here of songs by Joni Mitchell, Steve Earle, Big Star, the Kinks, the Who, the Ramones, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono.

I have compiled a set of what I consider the best of the three discs (tracklist follows). If nothing else, please listen to the opener, where "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" takes a clever detour into "Space Oddity". Happy holidays from the City Too Busy To Hate!

1 Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Uncle Green
2 Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Kelly Hogan
3 Run Rudolph Run - Tommy Rivers
4 Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow - The Continentals
5 Christmas - Big Fish Ensemble
6 Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight) - The Doll Squad
7 Frosty The Snowman - The Lizard Men
8 Heat Miser/Snow Miser - Radiant City
9 Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy - The Vidalias
10 Little Drummer Boy - Smoke
11 Listen The Snow Is Falling - Engine
12 Jesus Christ - #1 Family Mover
13 Please Come Home For Christmas - The Mighty Fine Slabs
14 Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - Michelle Malone
15 River - Face Of Concern
16 The Christmas Song - Shawn Mullins with David Patterson
17 I'll Be Home For Christmas - Kristen Hall
18 Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Anne Richmond Boston
19 I Believe In Father Christmas - The Backyard Swings

21 Christmas This Year - Hootie and the Blowfish
22 Feliz Navidad - The Ottoman Empire

Some more Christmas music for the REST of us

Because, of course, traditional Christmas music not only sucks ass, the repetitive NON STOP mind-numbingness of it turns it from mindless irritant to bullet-to-the-temple material....even the "respectable" parties are not immune to my wrath when it comes to thi particular subject....Springsteen's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town?" Gag. The Pretenders "2000 Miles" at least a partial gag.....and WORST OF ALL IS JOHN FUCKING LENNON'S "SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS" I would prefer to drink a gallon of house paint to EVER hearing that thing again......uuuuughhhh.

So, anyway.....I have a few albums here to offer some relief, I have probably posted some/all of them before, but 90% of you won't remember my doing so.....I thought about making a "Depressing Christmas" compilation, didn't get around to it, but it could include stuff like the Who's "Tommy Doesn't Know What Day It Is", Axl Rose's mangling of "White Christmas" (ever heard it?), Ben Folds Five's "Brick" (TECHNICALLY not about Christmas as it takes place the day AFTER Christmas, but is one of the most depressing songs ever written and is about taking his girlfriend to get an abortion),  and of course Elliott Smith's immortal "King's Crossing" which IS THE most depressing song ever written, witness, at least to me, the fact that he committed suicide shortly afterwards ("It's Christmas time, and the needle's on the tree, a skinny Santa is bringing something to me, his voice is overwhelming, and his speech is slurred, and I only understand every other word")....anyways I never got around to making that Ativan-inducing collection, and I did dig out these goodies, along with the WAY COOL "Power Pop Christmas" set from the other day (and if you didn't check it out you are doing yourself a disservice if you didn't download blog friend Tiltingsud's very great and I assume rare two-part Bob Dylan Christmas radio show, it is excellent and you SHOULD hear it!

So what have I got for you on this Christmas Eve? Well, a few things.....I have a pair of comps, one titled "A Punk Rock Christmas", the other titled "A Santa Cause: It's a Punk Rock Christmas".....these two sets are VERY similar, and I am going to do something I rarely do.....I am going to reprogram this, making it a two disc set without repetition...in general, I like for you to hear things as they were intended to be heard at the time of release, but I think in this case it was most likely issued and updated the following year, or something like that (if it is something else, don't correct me because I don't care, just appreciate the EXTRA WORK your uncle has done for ya here, so you get the WHOLE ENTIRE COMPLETE MASTERWORK! And there are some good uns on here.....Something Corporate, Blink 182, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Descendents, as well as lesser knowns as Punchline, Cousin Oliver, The Humpers, and LOTS LOTS MORE, in fact, so much more, that, as I said before, I need to make it into a pair of discs.....APPRECIATE the fucking work I do damnit!

Next up is a simple set entitled only "Merry Christmas", a short (10 track) collection of tracks from The Sonics, The Wailers, and The Galaxies. I like this one probably better than any, other than maybe the power pop set of the other day, dunno why really, I assume it's rare, and I really enjoyed it when listening to it today.

"Midnight Christmas Mess Again", part of a series of which I unfortunately do not have the others, is a some fairly unknown/obscure garage-punk type bands, Cheepskates, Vipers, Psycho Daisies, Dementia 13 check in with some sounds-o-the season, listened to some of this one today and enjoyed it quite a bit as well......

Not EXACTLY a Christmas album, I thought I'd put up the fairly obscure "Holy Fuzz Compilation" as well, while not "Christmas" stuff per se, it DOES come from some Christian metal bands of the 1970's-80's that at least I've never heard of, figured Christmas/Christianity, it's all the same hog trough, right?

And, now, get this, Skippy.....I was gonna quit here, but decided to see if there was anything of interest on the Bay, most of it is the usual swill, but a couple DID pique my interest, so I grabbed em for all of us: First, I found "Indie Rock Christmas Playlist", and I kind of wish I hadn't because it is ONE HUNDRED fucking tracks, but, I DO LOVE YOU GUYS, and I am going to split it into five discs, and I hope some of you download and tell me how great I am for giving you this gift and etc....The Ravonettes (whom you know I LOVE), Dropkick Murphys, The Darkness, The Killers, Bad Religion, and enough legit acts here that I think I should post it. Merry Christmas, minions, this is a bit of work, and this proves how much I love my massive audience.....as usual, ALL i ask in return is if you have anything cool, anything rare, anything you think is of interest, PLEASE share it..not just with ME, but with the other good folks who make this blog what I want it to be....a place for music lovers to SHARE, SHARE, SHARE.....I won't give speech again just yet, but, simply, that is what it is all about.

"Christmas Rock" overlaps the "Punk Rock" set a bit, but it includes some other stuff too, including
Lemmy kilmister, Dandy Warhols, Mew, No Doubt and some others, so basically I deem it worthy of inclusion here as well.....

Sometimes I wonder why I spend so much time on this fucking blog.....my wonderful wife questions it as times as well...but the reason is, I know what a joy it is to FINALLY find that impossible-to-get bootleg, it's exhilarating to say the least.....and if I've ever provided that feeling for EVEN ONE of you, it is worth it.......just please, please please, EVERYONE, continue to share all this great music with the rest of us, it makes the world such a MUCH better place.....

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you and your families. May this holiday season be a wonderful, loving experience for you, and may you all come to appreciate LIFE and FAMILY as much as I have come to in 2013. God bless you all! Love ya!

Christmas Music For "the rest of us"!

Busy, busy, busy.....getting ready for the holidays, getting ready to go back to (sigh) work soon, working on the huge, on going Jam post (great reaction, also great reaction to the Au-Pairs, and I continue to struggle with how I'm going to do the Yo La Tengo post, I just have SO MUCH material, more than I thought.... I'll get it figured out at some point).... so today, let me have a breather. (I've been working on the Jam post today too, finally got it up, but SO MANY links with all the FLAC files.....anyway the links are still uploading, it'll take a while.),

I don't THINK I have posted this before, sorry if I have, but it's a good one, full title: "Santa Claus and the Power Pop Criminals-A Collection of Power Pop Christmas Songs"....one would assume that it likely came from the great "Power Pop Criminals" site (http://powerpopcriminals.blogspot.com/), probably 2-3 years ago, but I don't think I've used it before on the blog.....if I have, enjoy it AGAIN, cause I'm not checking.

Standing out, to me, is one band you know I love, The Len Price Three, who check in with "It's Christmas Time, Ebeneezer". Other well known acts giving us some yuletide wonderment include Redd Kross, Weezer, Dwight Tilley, and the Smithereens, all stirred together with other less luminous lights of the power pop
universe, such as The Montgomey Clifts, Carpet Frogs, Nudge Em All, and Barely Pink.....TWENTY SEVEN Christmas nuggets in total, ALL worth a listen and ALL at the very least a refreshing change of pace from the "regular" Christmas music you've heard 1000 times by now......let this be a private, personal change of pace for ya, a gift from BigScott62 to yourself! I think I have a few more Christmas comps (punk, metal, don't recall), so maybe while I wait on "minion assistance" on the Jam/Au pairs, I may just take the lazy road and pop up another one or two in the next few days.

In all sincerity, I hope all the readers of this blog have a wonderful, happy, and joyous Christmas season. Myself I am happy that I am alive after the incident of September 20, and to find out now that it's pretty treatable stuff ("Complex" Sleep Apnea), I am overjoyed that I may have some years left!

Any of you guys got any rocking Christmas comps to share? Be a wonderful thing to do......the door is open for them until the big day, either send to me via email or simply convert and post in comments section, I'm sure EVERYONE here will appreciate the shares.......Christmas.....what BETTER time for SHARING the good things we have with OTHERS?
