A Black Sabbath Tribute

First of all, I have not the slightest doubt that Brian could have done this up WAY better than what we have here, just saying, and giving a shout out to Brian's skills at this type of thing..... in general, I hate slavish tributes/slavish cover projects,  I thought that we may have that on this Black Sabbath tribute, but, really, there are some legit interpretations of some of the Sab's great tunes here!

OK, this here is a two disc set, obviously plenty of modern metal owe a debt to Black Sabbath......so what have we here? Well, Disc 1 Biohazard leads off with a good "After Forever", Megadeth rip up "Paranoid", 1,000 Homo DJ's infamous version of "Supernaut" is here (it's fab), Sepulturea turns in a fine "Symptom of the Universe", and Faith No More turn in a good live "War Pigs"..... just the highlights, but I thought it was MUCH better than I had expected.

The second disc has a few gems also..... Godsmack comes through with "Sweet Leaf", Slayer turns in a "Hand of Doom", Monster Magnet CRUSHING "Into the Void", other stuff too (Bustah Rhymes? oh well)....

I think there have been a few other Sabbath tributes over the yearas, I may (or may not) have posted some here...... I think this one is the best, so dig in!

NATIVITY IN BLACK DISC 1-01 BIOHAZARD-After Forever/ 02 WHITE ZOMBIE-Children of the Grave/ 03 MEGADETH-Paranoid/ 04 1000 HOMO DJ's-Supernaut/ 05 OZZY OSBOURNE W/THERAPY-Iron Man/ 06 CORROSION OF CONFORMITY-Lord of This World/ 07 SEPULTURA-Symptom of the Universe/ 08 BULLRING BRUMMIES-The Wizard/ 09 BRUCE DICKINSON WITH GODSPEED-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath/ 10 UGLY KID JOE-NIB/ 11 FAITH NO MORE-War Pigs (Live)/ 12 TYPE O NEGATIVE-Black Sabbath/ 13 CATHEDRAL-Solitude

Q-U-E-E-N Covers and a classic concert

Something tells me to be cautious with this one. They seem like one of those nice old English bands who will DMCA you out of existence if you post their stuff. So, they shall be referred to as Q. First up, we have a concert that I had to dig in the dustiest corner of the Internet to find.....

The Freddie Mercury Tribute concert was a big event of my adolescence. I was born after Woodstock and The Concert For Bangladesh, I was too young to give a shit about Live Aid, so this was it for me. And it was that time when Q's star rose again after Freddie's death due to that one song being in a comedy....you know the one...

I don't want to talk about the gig much, cuz I'll use names that attract too much attention. For a long time, all I had was my cassettes of this show that I'd recorded off the radio. That was until I came across this Italian bootleg. It seems to be an audio dupe of the TV feed, but it's good quality. I always wondered why this wasn't released, and after hearing the whole thing I know why. There's feedback spikes and audio dropouts throughout the show. This happens even at the show's ultimate moment: Bowie and Annie Lennox's "Under Pressure". I've always read that Wembley Stadium can be nightmarish for sound. It's not horrible by any means, but there's a few spikes.

This is the whole show, with only a few exceptions. I took out You Too's track cuz it was just one of those piped-in ZooTV tour performances they were always doing. Also includes several things cut from broadcast (Spinal Tap, Bob Geldof), as well as some things cut from videotape and DVD releases (RP's "Innuendo"). Go to the wiki page and give it a read -

One more thing I wanna say about this concert: this should've been it. The finale. The group's later reformations with Paul Rodgers (ugh) and Adam Lambert (aaggh!) did nothing but besmirch the legend. Freddie was it, there's no replacing him. This would've been a good finale....Liza's "Champions" not withstanding. There's plenty of overblown moments, like GNR's reggae breakdown in the middle of "Knockin'", but is a great show. Now on to the cool covers comp I made to go along with this....

Regarding this covers comp, I want to address something. You'll notice that there are three specific Q songs that are not here. And it's because I'm utterly fucking sick of them!!! They have saturated classic rock radio for decades, to the point where they're no more emotionally moving to me than a rendition of "I'm A Little Teapot". Also, they seem to be the only songs that other people judge Q by, and that's not fair. I'm not meaning to shit on them if you like them, but I just didn't want to include them.

No write up this time, guys. Just roll with it - you always seem to.

A complimentary piece to Brian's Bowie Tribute

(Scott)-First of all, how about that Bowie covers project? Masterminded, of course, by the king  of cover
projects the one and only Brian.... the post has been hit A LOT, as it should be. Now, along comes Jon S. (a fantastic recent addition to the blog!) with a supplemental/ complementary piece to Brian's, featuring the band Shearwater (of whom, I will be quite honest, I have never heard..... that's why I LOVE it!)... Jon S. will tell ya all about it....
---------------------------------------------------

This is meant as a complement to Brian's massive Bowie covers tribute. It is a very thoughtful and thorough collection he put together.
Just a couple of days ago, I saw the band Shearwater had covered the Bowie album Lodger for the website, The AV Club. Like Brian said, listening to the covers, although fairly faithful to the original, gave me a new appreciation for the album. (The youtube link is below if you want to watch the in-studio performance.)
Also included here is a live performance of Lodger by Shearwater, recorded recently by nyctaper (I know Scott mentioned them in a post not long ago - a great site!). And, since they're a really great band in their own right, I also added the new album, Jet Plane And Oxbow, by Shearwater and another nyctaper live show.

Brian's Bowie Tribute

(Scott)-This is one you guys will want to hear....Brian, of course, being the "king of cover projects", and this
one.... well, it's Bowie, what more needs to be said...... I got a sneak preview of this a week ago, and this one is killer again, Brian is perhaps the best on earth at creating these particular projects, and I am thrilled that we can post them here! Don't miss this one, although after he describes the project for you, I think you will be running, not walking, to grab this beast!
--------------------------------------------------
This one has been in the works for awhile. I started it around the time of the Hot Rocks covers comp. After an initial burst, I left it alone for many weeks. I was finding it hard to listen to Bowie. At one point, I almost uploaded what I had, a half-assed collection of 17 covers, just to be done with it. But this little corner of the Internet likes my covers comps, and if anyone deserves doing right, it's Bowie. So.... now we have a kickass collection of 50+ covers! And given that Bowie is the inspiration, the musical variety on display is even a bit more than usual... though no Laibach, strangely enough....

If I've never said it to you before, I've got something to say now about these covers projects. One of the reasons I like doing them so much is that each time, I learn something. I often don't know a good amount of the groups I'm assembling, or maybe not those specific songs by the artist being covered. A good example of this is the Dylan covers pile back in September - I was a completely different Dylan fan after I made that one! Often, there's a cover or two that provides the first impetus, and then it goes on from there. And please, never think I just grab the first okay cover of a song I find. I'm always deleting and finding new ones til everything sounds just right.

This Bowie comp is a good example of that. But the bitch of it was, I couldn't nail down the tracklist. I knew what I wanted to begin and end the parts with, but that was all. Finally, I just went all "raffle ticket" with it, putting song titles on bits of paper and shaking em up in a box. Somehow, I think David would appreciate that idea. And for once, each one of these clocks in under 80 mins, should any of you have the desire to burn them onto CD.

Guys, given the size of this, I don't want to write about every track. I'll talk about some of the unique ones and favorites on here, but just roll with the rest of it, OK? By this point, you know whether or not you like what I do, and trust me when I say this one is good. My writing batteries are just a little low right now.

Many people have covered Bowie. There were a lot of versions of "Life On Mars?" and "Space Oddity" - from artists as disparate as Natalie Merchant and Barbra Streisand. There's two versions of "Heroes" here because I couldn't decide between the faithful cover (Junkyard Liberty) or the awesome shoegaze (Luna Ghost). So, I've bracketed each volume with two covers of each of these three Bowie standards. But don't worry - no Streisand.

The reimagining of "Let's Dance" by German metal band Atrocity is brilliant, making one of my least favorite DB songs highly listenable again. The a cappella version of "Changes" by the Calvillo Sisters was ripped from a YouTube vid. I like it for it's uniqueness. I love Rickie Lee Jones's acoustic "Rebel Rebel". Seu Jorge's version of "Lady Stardust" is from the Portuguese-language Bowie covers he did for the movie The Life Aquatic With Steve ZissouBauhaus's "Ziggy Stardust" just kills...I don't think I've ever heard Peter Murphy howl like that! And the version of "Scary Monsters" is by Frank Black and David Bowie, because if anyone is gonna defy the rules - not to mention death - on one of my comps, it's Bowie! (Plus, the only other easily findable version by Laether Strip is pseudo-KMFDM crap).

The Melvins are the perfect group to cover "Breaking Glass". The same can be said of Tears For Fears' and Franz Ferdinand's covers, too. Phillip Glass's "V-2 Schneider" is from his Low Symphony - definitely worth checking out. Of course, Nirvana is here. Michelle Branch is an early 2000's pop crush of mine, and she also turns in a great "Life On Mars?". Scott Weiland (RIP) was always a glam boy at heart, and his version of "Fame" with Paul Oakenfold retains Bowie's sense of funk. And I've never heard of Steve Salas, but that is an awesome cover of "Always Crashing..."!

And many, many, many more....

And a big thanks again to Jonder for helping me with this one. He did the cover art and some track editing for me. Someday I'll get a working computer again, but in the meantime, he's a great cohort to have. Go back a few weeks and give his posts some love, too.

Brian's Tribute to the Violet One

(Scott) Welcome back to Brian, who has been away for a little while, he has created a new covers/tribute
thing which he does so well......I listened to most of it this AM, and you guys are really going to like this one....I am not going to say too much, and as you read on, you will see why, but other than that, this is another gem, and a timely one as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Out of the loop for a few weeks. I had two other things going, but this suddenly took precedence of creation. And this post I have to be absolutely careful with! One of the other bits of news to go along with his death was his suing of fans and bloggers. And somebody else is gonna be fighting over that catalog now, so ssshhhhhh...... keep any comments non-specific.

I have been a fan of P since I was a kid. I was seven years old when my mom took me to see P. Rain in 1984. Even when I was young, I could see that P was a real musician, compared to somebody else like M.J. He was a pop star, yes, but he was also a soul star, the only popular funk artist of the 80's, and above all he really was a Rock Star

The news of his death really hit me, as much if not a bit more than Bowie's passing. P was my childhood and adolescence. While I admit I fell in and out of his music over the years, I stayed aware of the major sea changes of his career. He may have been a mystery to us normal humans, but he was a prodigious and accomplished musician. The guy could play anything.

This covers project came together quickly, over the course of about 6 hours last Friday night. Like many of my covers projects, this is an eclectic mix. The true mark of an artist is the ability to influence people outside of their own style of music. Some of you may be sick of hearing P's music by now, but I made this in the depths of my mourning for him, and it is really good....check the tracklist....

I can't refer to things by track titles, it'll attract bots like flies to shit. But I do want to talk about it, so I'll mention the artists' names....

Incubus's cover is the perfect lead off track for this. You can really tell they dug the movie when they were young. Norwegian metal/dark ambient collective Ulver deliver a great version of their track. Chris Cornell's cover is here instead of Ms. O'Connor's because I think he really digs into the meat of it, and it's not as precious as her version.

The Foo Fighters' cover is just awesome...I feel ashamed I didn't know about it before. The version of "K-i-s-s" is a great one by a band I found on YouTube named Frank Velardo's Aardvark Felon (http://youtu.be/PTE81EbgX04). It's only had a few hundred views, and I think it's the best version out there. I like the bassline and the singer's Bootsy-like falsetto. Scottish electronic pop group CHVRCHES are the perfect choice for their song. It's got the same youthful vigor and hope as the original, and I'm always a sucker for a pretty Scottish girl....

QOTSA's great cover is from one of the "Desert Sessions" discs. Warren Zevon's cover shows the sweet rock and roll heart that was often at the core of P's music. Arcade Fire's cover was an interesting funky find. The Eels' live version is a great reimagining of that song, too. Once again, Etta James shows up in a cover project of mine, delivering a heartbreaking version of THE P. song.

Misty Dixon's cover is a great, spacey version. Corrine Bailey Rae's song is a funky version of one of P's earliest singles, with the same playful synths. Sufjan Steven's cover is a fun modern reimagining. The track by Muse is a great version of one of P's best topical songs. The next two covers are by two of P's pop contemporaries from the time, Marshall Crenshaw and Gary Numan. I really like Crenshaw's track. Numan, I can only assume, was looking for a hit after "In Cars".
If you've heard previous covers comps of mine, you know Laibach is always liable to show up to give a song a brutal facelift. And here, they manage to take one of the most optimistic songs off of Sign... and give it a very different meaning. The comp ends with Sandra Bernhard's transcendent cover, which may be familiar to the few of you who downloaded her album I posted last year. It's a heartbreaking closer.

Big ups to Jonder for helping me with this one, eliminating banter and editing down track lengths. We've got a David Lynch anthology coming sometime soon, with the music and movie dialogue blended into suites. We've been obsessing over it, and it's gonna be really cool, so keep an eye out.

Guys, even with me being careful with this post, there's no guarantee of how long this will be up. So, if you read this, you download it, y'hear? And please, READ THE TEXT FILE THAT COMES WITH THE COMP. THERE ARE ADDITIONAL GOODIES TO BE FOUND IN THERE.

There is a bonus comedy link for this post, a collection of stories by a guy you may know named Charlie M. One of the best tracks is about playing basketball and having pancakes with P.

The String Quartet: A Tribute to Guns N Roses

Hey, I TRY to get some variety into your life.... The String Quartet, also called The Vitamin String Quartet, has released dozens of these, ie tributes to various rock bands, done up classical style........ there truly isn't a lot for me to say here, the title pretty much says it all..... this is posted pretty much as a lark, enjoy it, ignore it, do what you will do......

I'd like to wish a happy birthday (50th!) to BigCarla66, my one and only, the love of my life and the greatest wife anyone could ever hope for...... last year on her birthday I posted some Bowie discs (her fave), I don't think she's likely heard this one, but since I know she loves the sound of classical music, I think she will like this.

March 30 is ALSO a sad day for me, because my Dad, (BigMike42?) passed away on this day in 1990, at the age of 48...... he was always open to anything musically, he would have loved this also, I think. I miss him, he passed before the explosion of file-sharing/internet music, my GOD he would have loved it.......

Anyway, Dad I hope all is good with you in the afterlife, and again, BigCarla66, I love you more than life itself....... March 30 EVERY year is a happy/sad day, but I will always honor those whom I love, on this blog, with music I think they would like.

A TRIBUTE TO GUNS N ROSES-01 Welcome to the Jungle/02 Sweet Child o Mine/03 Knockin On Heaven's Door/04 Paradise City/05 Don't Cry/06 November Rain/07 Live and Let Die/08 Mister Brownstone/09 Yesterdays/10 Patience/11 14 Years/12 Civil War

Again, Happy Birthday Carla, and RIP Dad........

Full Blown Cherry

Hey, you just never know......when I stumbled across something called "A Rockabilly Tribute to the Ramones", I of course thought "this is for me", figuring it had to be in the so-awful-it's essential category, and I was set to torture you kind folks with it.

Know what though? It really is enjoyable to listen to......the simplicity of rockabilly combined with the simplicity of the Ramones actually DOES work, of course it IS still amusing, but far from unlistenable....I find that Full Blown Cherry has also given the world "A Rockabilly Tribute to AC-DC" as well, if I can find that one likely IT may be spectacularly horrible, but this one, not so much........

Just a little something different, if you are a fan of either the Ramones or of rockabilly, this does not insult either of them. The world is often to serious a place, really, and we need more light-hearted throwaways such as this.

A ROCKABILLY TRIBUTE TO THE RAMONES-01 Blitzkrieg Bop/02 Rockaway Beach/03 Sheena Is a Punk Rocker/04 Cretin Hop/05 She's the One/06 Judy Is a Punk/07 The KKK Took My Baby Away/08 Teenage Lobotomy/09 I Wanna Be Sedated/10 Do You Remember Rock n Roll Radio/11 Beat on the Brat/12 Bop Till You Drop

Tribute to David Bowie, Part 3, and , Sadly, Out......

I think this is going to have to do it for the Bowie tribute.... I was checking, I probably have 50 or so live shows, and I hate to get into redundancy..... besides there ARE other projects I wish to get to. I'm going to make this a good one, I hope, I good combination of good listening/rarities, I wish I could put up ALL my live/rare Bowie stuff, REALLY I DO, but it's just not in the cards right now.... I've put up a good, (I hope) representative bit so far, and I hope this next batch helps you find something you've not heard before, and IF there is a specific concert for which you search LET ME KNOW and I will post it if I have it (I am NOT going to list all of them).......

By the way, Dale Griffin of Mott the Hoople passed away......Mott was one of probably my ten favorite bands, ever, and to lost the great Buffin (a fine, Ringo Starr-styled drummer) sucks, I think I have posted all my Mott stuff a couple times so I don't think I'll do a tribute there, but PLEASE RIP Buffin, the drummer from one of my favorite bands ever to take the stage.

So, in wrapping up this Bowie thing I had to whitle the stack down to a few, a LOT fewer than I had awnated (I mean, WHAT to leave out? none of it is "bad", ALL of it is at very minimum "interesting").....I begin tonight with "Early On", and when they say EARLY on, that's the case......here's a batch of tracks from 1964-67, WAY before most any human being had heard of Mr. Bowie (Jones, at that time at least for part of it)......again, you will enjoy this, it's not "great", by any meanas, but it is great to hear the seeds of the brilliance that would come to bloom in the next decade. For a Bowie "completist", this is a must.

Next I have an album called "Live Ziggy Stardust", it is NOT the motion picture soundtrack I'm not really sure what it is, actually, I include it because I can't seem to find another copy of it, giing me the feeling that it MIGHT be "rare"? if it's not, forgive me, but, great "Ziggy" era live tracks and a "John I'm Only Dancing"/"Waiting For My Man" encore. A good album, wish I could identify it a bit more accurately.

Well, a little "research" (luck) tells me that the above is Disc Two of a 2 disc set, the other half being "The Alternate Ziggy Stardust", still can't find much info about who put it together, or ehn, or why, or etc, but it's great listening......."Velvet Goldmne" and "Round and Round" don't turn up all that often. Both discs are here, if afnyone has any information about them, spew it........they seem to be FAIRLY hard to find, and are quite good.

Next up, "Somebody Up There Likes Me", which I gather to be a fan-club type release from about 1984, there are a BUNCH of this type of thing around, as you know Bowie's following was/is huge and rabid. Not the rarest bunch of songs in the universe, but "Footstompin" and "Sorrow" don't turn up all that often. Please bear with me, I'm selecting pretty much at random with the stuff I have left, just pretty much grabbing stuff by the handful.

Well. let me see......I have something called "Resurrection on 84th Street", I post this to deviate a bit from the glut of Ziggy-era stuff, this gives us some fine stuff from "Aladdin Sane", ("Panic In Detroit", a great and terrifying song, rarely turns up on these sets, and is here in an interesting, lengthened version also a good bit of stuff from "Station to Station", notably a lengthy version of the title track. This is recorded live at the Nassau Colosseum, and exists in a few different (slightly varied) versions with a couple different titles.

Oh, how I wish I had infinite time and space and etc to do up ALL these live shows.....as you all know Bowie was an unmatched live performer, SOMETIMES it didn't transform all the way when transferred to record, but those of us fortunate enough to see him live know what I'm saying......

At random, I wanted to go with at least one "Ziggy" era live show, I selected a London show from Bowie's "farewell" tour (remember that?), I select it for it's inclusion of "All the Young Dudes" (RIP Buffin, once again), and some guest guitar from Jeff Beck on a rocking "Jean Genie"

Something a little different that I found cruising the web the other day, have never heard this one, "Gotta Get It Right" it's a kind of muddled rehearsal tape for Marc Bolan's TV show, "Marc", from 1977......a very unique recording, It gave me a chill the first time I listened.....NOT going into heavy rotation for anyone, that I can imagine, but I also can't imagine someone with an interest in Bowie and the entire early 1970's glitter/glam scene not taking interest in this.

I have to stop somewhere, and here is where it will be. The last time I saw Bowie was in 1995, when he teamed with Nine Inch Nails for an incredible tour, the show I saw In Columbus Ohio was staggering, wish I had a copy of it, but instead here is one from St Louis, 10/1/95.......simply stated, this was a historic undertaking and you REALLY need to hear this, I need to go into ZERO detail..And, while DIME-surfing I found another show from the same tour, FLAC file, sorry,(EVERYTHING on DIME is FLAC) but from 9/14 /95 In Hartford Connecticut. Similar setlist, but since I don't have to reup another CD, I'll give ya this one as well.....an audience recording with some unfortunate cuts, notably the opener "Terrible Lie" starts part way in. Can't have it all, can we?

OK.....I have (lots) more, but I am moving on.......There is no limit to the tribute I could pay to David Bowie, much like I felt about Kurt Cobain, if you recall I thought about on the anniversary of Cobain's death posting ALL of the Nirvana shows I have.......but since I have about 200, wheredo you draw the line?  I am trying to avoid redundancy, keep things fresh, etc, but I want to tribute the greats, and have no doubts, Bowie was IMO one of the TRUE great artists of our time, or any other time.

Farewell David Bowie. I hope this tribute is satisfactory.... btw John Baker, when you see this, YEP, interested in whatever rare stuff you (or anyone else) has.... this tribute can go on forever if there is a steaady flow of good, rare stuff out there that we'd all love to hear.
