Jon S with the REPLACEMENTS HELL YEAH!

(Scott)-I did a huge 'mats post several years back, I had several boots in mine, and yes, Jon S is
ABSOLUTELY correct, 'mats boots, in general sound like shit, so much so that I am not about to go dig them out again.....however, the 'mats were one of THE great bands of te 1980's, no question, and I am thrilled to see these releases in duluxe-expanded versions! Tremendous!

Oh, the head reels..... "Here Comes a Regular" is one of the best songs ever written by ANYONE, "Waitress In the Sky", "Gary's Got a Boner"...... what a fun and great band!

Also can't wait to read the fuckin' BOOK! Thanks Jon S for continuing to submit stuff that is near and dear to my heart!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just found this book after reading about it and figured I'd pass it along, even though I haven't read it yet. And, then I thought "Fuck it, I'll pass along the rest of The 'Mats stuff I have." Only one boot; most I've heard are shit. I know some don't think much of them after a certain point but either you're a fan down the line or you're not, its up to you. Most of these are expanded sets, in case you don't have em already.

More Japanese rock from Jonder

(Scott)-this one I know, and it is worth your while..... Used to have this one, actually maybe I still do, but PLEASE don't let the Japanese language scare you away from this one.....really, really, great stuff, AND, I strongly suggest you read the book in the bonus section on the Jap Rock scene, it's really tremendous as well!
----------------------------------------------------

Bleach (known in the US as Bleach 03 or Bleachmobile) is a different kind of trio: they are "Three Girls from Okinawa" as the title of their compilation album describes them.  Bleach sound nothing like High Rise or those three girls from Osaka, Shonen Knife.   Bleach combine spazzy punk, thrash metal breakdowns and funky riffs.  All three members sing, and bassist Miya unleashes some guttural screams worthy of Cannibal Corpse.  You can see the band's virtuosity in these live performances:  youtu.be/pFX0A7jSzTU  and youtu.be/Ibns1U6vg7w

The first Bleach album came out in 2000, and they announced their breakup in 2009 upon the release of their fifth album, Bleachstone.  Their self-titled album came out in Japan in 2003, and was reissued in the US in 2005.  It ends with a hidden track that doesn't begin until 3:00.

There is a bonus in the comments section for those who are interested in reading a well-researched history of Japan's rock scene in the 1960's and 1970's, written by a famous Drude from Liverpool.

01 Kuropen Bigaku Tenshi-Chan to Kangaemashita (My Sweet Angel and I)/02 Sun-Dance--Moon-Dance/03
Canary Teikoku No Gyakushuu (Canary Empire Strikes Back)/04 Chousen (Challenge)/05 Raiko-Kareki Ni Hana Wa Sakanai (Lightning-Flowers Don't Bloom)/06 Nils/07 He (Hips)/08 Howling/09 Arigato Gozaimasu (Thank You Very Much)/10 Taiyou (Sun)/11 Untitled Track

So, anyone up for some Kurt Vonnegut?

There are other things to do but listen to music, burnout...... I am presenting here a partial collection of works from my favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr...... if you are unfamiliar with him (?) I really don't know how to describe him..... hilarious, ironic, satirical, touching.....fans of Vonnegut may wish to check out the audiobooks here (there are a few) and there are also a few PDF files if you be old school and like to actually read.

My fave, of course, is "Slaughterhouse Five", in which Billy Pilgrim jumps about in time, of course living through the bombing of Dresden as Vonnegut himself did (it's a somewhat recurring theme)......but he was no "one book wonder", not by any means...."Cat's Cradle"....."Sirens of Titan"......"Breakfast of Champions"....to me, hands down the greatest author of the 20th century. He passed away a few years ago.

He is missed.

Here is what is here:

"Welcome to the Monkey House" (audio book)
"Breakfast of Champions" (audio book)
"Hocus Pocus" (audio book)
"Slaughterhouse Five" (audio book)
The PDF package-"Breakfast Of Champions","Cat's Cradle", "Mother Night", "Next Door", "Player Piano", "Slapstick (Or Lonesome No More)", "Slaughterhouse Five", "The Sirens of Titan"

OK guys, prove your intellectual side...... this is GREAT
reading material, some of the best fiction EVER created. this is not what I ALWAYS do, but I do like to change things up on occasion......I will watch the traffic CAREFULLY on this one, as I have many authors that I love (Tom Robbins, Bill James, Margaret Atwood, George Orwell, Chuck Palahulnik, Dan Simmons, and LOTS more....lets see if this is a literary crowd or not. If not, no big deal, literature has always been important to me (GOD I wish I was a great writer)....if this meets with little interest, I'll file it away with "bad ideas"......but I hope a few of you are at least semi-thrilled!

Hunter S Thompson Part 2

Glad that the first half of this effort, Brian's half, has been so well received, I just never can tell how these things are going to play out. Anyway. glad it's been popular, as Brian stated, explaining who the man was is redundant, HOWEVER, if you have not read much of his material, or heard him speak, that post, and hopefully this one, will be helpful to you.

The centerpiece of THIS effort is the five CD set, "The Gonzo Tapes: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson".....these are taken from his personal cassette and reel-to-reel tapes (Thompson recorded EVERYTHING), and were trasferred to digital by Don Fleming. The short version: Disc One deals with the masterful "Hell's Angels", including a snippet of Thompson and Allen Ginserg being pulled over by law enforcement after partying with the Angels......Disc 2 & 3 are both filled with stuff from the "Fear and Loathing In
Las Vegas" era, perhaps his best known work, Disc 4 ("Gonzo Gridlock"), is stuacked with stuff from 1972 while he was working on "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72" and include his breakdowns of Freud's "Cocaine papers"; and finally Disc 5, "Fear and Loathing In Saigon", which is just what it sounds like, his dispatches regarding the Vietnam War. You know already if this stuff is going to be of interest to you, going into detail would be a waste of our times.

These, combined with all the audio good stuff in part 1, should cover all of your audio needs for a while, but I thought it would be good also to include a batch of PDF files that you can actually read, my preferred method, what I managed to come up with, from my own hard drive and The Pirate bay are:

"Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas", "Hell's Angels", The Gonzo Letters Volumes 1 & 2, encompassing "Proud Highway" and "Fear and Loathing in America", "Screwjack", "The Great Shark Hunt", and "The Rum Diary".......all of these are in one handy RAR file, just check the link for PDF and you'll get them all......one precaution, often times downloaded PDF files are rife with errors, I THINK I've checked all these pretty thoroughly (I had to disinclude a handful for that reason, but if I missed one, sorry).....

Also, I am not about to type out the names of all the tracks here, nor am
I tagging them, if you open the "Track Lists" file, there are photos of the backs of the CD case, blow them up, voila, track lists.

I sure did enjoy putting this one together, or, to be more accurate, helping Brian to do so (his idea), hope you all like this, I think the audio stuff is REALLY great, somewhat hard to locate, and 1000% worthwhile, while thte actual literature is nothing short of essential.

Again, let me know what you think of this type of post.......any other authors you'd like to see profiled (although Thompson is easier to capture in audio form since he was such an audiophile), I was thinking of seeing how much Vonnegut is available in e-book format, don't worry, I won't get TOTALLY literary on ya right now, I'd wait a few months for that.....I'm hoping to get an ENORMOUS Throbbing Gristle thing ready for the next couple days, which will include the "24 Hours" cassette set and more, and of course my infertile mind probably has another project or two cooking, so I hope you all enjoy this one, like it or don't, ya GOTTA admit this isn't the stuff you see on ALL the blogs, right?

Seems like a good time to remind everyone that NOTHING
makes me happier than people contributing interesting shit here, and it DOES NOT have to be music, it can be ANYTHING.....I love literature, comics, photo collections, ANYTHING you might have that you wish to share with others.

And PLEASE if you are going to ask for anything to be re-upped: In general I do not do them......I simply get too many requests and could never get to them all.....I WILL, however, personally send you a new link for what you are requesting IF FIRST YOU contribute something for the overall good of the blog. Thank you.

I have told Brian that this may turn out to be one of my favorite posts ever, and should any of you have any additional audio OR E-Book (pdf or otherwise), send them along (REALLY wish I could have found a text version of "Hey Rube" but couldn't find one)......let us make this as comprehensive as possible.....long ago I did a post on so of my personal favorite dystopian fiction, and recieved quite a favorable response, including some fine contributions that were new to me......I don't really want to move this blog TOTALLY to a literary thing, but as I stress ANYTHING (almost) GOES here, as LONG AS IT IS INTERESTING (and who is the judge of THAT?, you may ask.....it's in the eye of the beholder of course, but in this case we'll just simplify it and say "me".)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
After Part 1, I found a few more goodies you guys should check out. I scored them off of the endlessly interesting Archive.org. First up is a 55 minute interview HST did for Studs Terkel's radio show in 1973. He talks about all his books up to that point, the nuthouse of Nixon's administration, and quite a few other great stories from the era. I originally found this as a single file, but then I scored this two part file for ya. A great listen. I like it even better than the lecture disc.

There is also a folder containing all Hunter's articles for the National Observer in the early 60's. He was their South American corespondent, and that was a particularly hot spot of the world back then: communist insurgents, American expansionism, despotic rulers, etc. These articles definitely show that he could do straight journalism as well, while making it readable and to the point. And for a kind of context, this is the work he was doing that was the basis for what would later be The Rum Diary.

And lastly, I've got a link for something cool you need to read. When Nixon died in 1994, Hunter wrote this obituary/essay/screed for him. I remember reading it in excerpted form in Rolling Stone at the time. I was in high school, and it was the first writing of Hunter's that ever drew me in. It was just a savage, hilarious indictment of this motherfucker of an ex President, and I had to find out more about HST. It's a great read, and one of my favorite works of his.

Hope you guys have been enjoying the Thompson Treasure Trove. Now you gotta study.... (ALL links for audio AND written work are in the comments section, hopefully clearly defined.)
