The Dead Kennedys (Part 1)

[(Brian) - Rescuing one of Scott's posts from way back. "Demo" and "Skateboard" are dead, so don't ask.....]
The Dead Kennedys were a hardcore crew from San Francisco in the early 1980's, leader Jello Biafra has long been a vocal advocate of free speech, and an avowed critic of censorship, much as I myself attempt to be, so more power to him......Ticketmaster would not even print the band's name on its tickets when they toured, referring to them as the "DK's", much like the current Washington Redskins fiasco. The early lineup, by the way, was Biafra on vocals, guitarists East Bay Ray and 6025, drummer Ted, and bassist Klaus Floride, they cranked out a Pistols-like din, although
unlike the Pistols who seemingly were motivated by anger, the Kennedy's, fronted by Biafra's helium induced yelp, seemed inspired by fear of the world in which they lived. So, album #1, 1980's "Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables" is thier best, an important album in the context of its release, and quite enjoyable to listen to today.....a fine album, stacked with the likes of "Kill the Poor", "Let's Lynch the Landlord", "California  Uber Alles", "Holiday In Cambodia" and LOTS more....you want this, if you've not heard
it, a couple of more notes: even the Ramones would not be able to keep up with the speedy "Drug Me", and, for some reason (much to my surprise), my favorite track on the original album has been removed from the CD reissues ("Police Truck"), which is no prob as we'll just use my convenient VINYL RIP for this one!

Next up was the great EP "In God We Trust Inc", which is also stacked with some fine shit, notably the graphic "Religious Vomit" and perhaps their best known track, "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" which helped to shed some light on skinhead attrocities in the Bay Area at the time. A note: the original cassette release (I don't have one) had all 8 tracks on one side, the B-side being blank, with the following note: "Home Taping Is Killing record industry profits. We left this side blank so you can help".......gotta admire that, and Bow Wow Wow used the same tactic on "Your Cassette Pet".
So, next release for the lads was 1982's "Plastic Surgery Disasters", a pretty good effort which features such material as "Winnebago Warrior" and "Terminal Preppie", among others, although IMO not up to the standards of the earlier releases.

1985's "Frankenchrist" is also a fairly so-so effort, with occasional winners like "Soup Is Good Food", and "MTV-Get Off the Air"... the final "official" release was 1986's "Bedtime For Democracy", and the joke was about over... like similar bands, this could only go on for so long... it's here, should you want the complete set....
 ....and this entire collection is dedicated to the memory of Marshall Phillips.   He would have liked this post, I think, so Marshall, my friend, this one is for YOU. Rest In Peace Brother!

DFL

[(Brian) - rescuing another good single upload from way back. Who doesn't need some more hardcore? And BTW, part 2 of the Dead Kennedys is long since dead, so please don't ask]

Yesterday someone asked for some DFL, I was as honest as I could be (ie: "I never heard of them"),
but I did investigate, DFL was a hardcore punk crew, ca. mid-1990's, ("Dead Fucking Last" in case you were wondering), early on the lineup seemed to consist of vocalist Tom Davis, guitarist/vocalist Monty Messex, bassist Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz of Beastie Boys fame, and drummer Tony Converse, with occasional drumming from also-Beastie Boy "Mike D" Diamond.

They released the albums "My Crazy Life" (1993), "Hurricane/DFL-America's Most Hardcore" (1994), "Proud to Be" (1995), and, according to which source you care to beleive, a few different cassette only or vinyl only issues......I DO know that after checking that they had a track on the "Punk O Rama" compilation that I posted long ago.

OK, so a check of Pirate bay yields us a copy of "Proud To Be", presented here in all it's glory.....what does it sound like? Well, basically Ramones-length (less than 2 minutes) blasts, 1980's west-coast hardcore style vocals (Germs/Black Flag/etc).....the unique factor seems to me, at least on this album, is that everything has that echo-ing production finish, very similar to the Beastie Boy's "Check Yer Head" album, and specifically the single "So What You Want?"

Gave the whole thing a listen this morning, not likely to become a big favorite any time soon, but I really do try to fill requests, in whatever limited capacity, if I can. Give it a listen, at the very least, if you don't like it, it won't take up too much of your day.

Death Valley Girls

Anyway, a fine effort......"Glow In the Dark" is a fine album that wears it's influences quite proudly, (punk, glam, psych, disco).......I like this one a good bit, end of year lists? we'll see, but for now, this is a good one......you might want to hurry, cause, you know........

Last Call - Vancouver Independent Music 1977-88

This is an extensive two disc set of Vancouver music, most of it highly obscure.... the tracks on the first disc are pretty much "punk" stuff, ("Fucked Up baby" by the Skulls, "Slave To My Dick" by Subhumans, "UJ3erks" from Eisenhower and the Hippies, Pointed Sticks, Active Dogs, plenty more.  Haven't done anything like this is a little while, this one just turned up while I was looking for something else, but I carpet bombed and found it most enjoyable, hell who DOESN'T love long, obscure regional punk collections?

Disc 2 goes off in a few different directions, more in the what some may call the "alternative" direction, going so far as to include a few "better known" bands such as Slow, Nomeansno, and a few others, much more variety of style on this disc.

Basically the whole package is worth your time, check em out!

Crack Whore Society

Yeah, like I'm gonna pass on a band called "Crack Whore Society".... this one's been sitting on the shelf for a while, seems like about time to drag it out. This crew is from Germany, as far as I know, this self-titled release is their one and only, a nice blend of hardcore punk/stoner riffing......

Crack Whore Society were (are?) singer Patrick Schauer, guitarist Mario Bender, guitarist Kai Mohr, and drummer Marco Haas.

Well, with a moniker like this, they are going to attempt to "shock" obviously, so be sure and check "Heroin Youth", "Crack baby", and "Sweet Gasoline"....... actually this is a pretty fair album, kind of a curiosity, but still a rocking effort, quite enjoyable.

The Eyeliners

Wish I had more, but only have a pair of albums from this New Mexico pop-punk girl trio, you know what a sucker I am for THAT kind of stuff.... anyone help with their other albums? If not, these two are pretty damn good listens.

Something like a cross between a not-as-serious Sleater Kinney and the aching little-girl vocals of Nikki Corvette or the Junior Varsity, The Eyeliners were sisters Lisa Baca (bass, vocals), Laura Baca (drums, Vocals), and Gel Baca (guitar, vocals)....they got it going in about 1997 or so, releasing four albums on the "Sympathy For the Record Industry" label..... pretty hard stuff to find, perhaps one of my team has copies of these, in around 2000, they switched over to Lookout/Panic Button Records, and released these two gems that I have here:

"Here Comes Trouble" was released in 2000, and is filled with those awesome chick/pop/punk blasts that give me such shivers, the title track, "Rock N Roll baby", "Punk Rock Planet"....a bunch more. I recommend this one.

A year or so later they came up with a somewhat similar album, "Sealed With a Kiss", which is also a pretty good one for your listening pleasure, if you liked "Trouble" I predict you'll like this one as well.......

They've also released an album since "Sealed", don't have it and haven't heard it, I'm up for it, should anyone have it, but for now, I think these two albums are sufficient to give you a pretty good look at a somewhat unknown/ overlooked band.

The Finale of the X Collaboration, somewhat lacking.......

WOW, don't know what happened to the rest of my X studio discs, I was pretty sure I had most all of em, I
seem to be lacking "Under the big Black Sun", "More Fun in the New World", "Ain't Love Grand", and "Hey Zeus!"......I'm certain someone will come up with them, and at least I have the most important pair, "Los Angeles" and the masterful "Wild Gift", as well as "See How We Are" and the two-disc "X Anthology", which combines studio tracks, rarities, demos, and live tracks into as good an anthology as has ever been created on ANY band!

"Los Angeles" was an immediate classic upon it's release, capturing the spirit of that city's scene  with a 4-star effort, including the staggering title track, "Sex and Dying In High Society", and plenty more.....no "one hit wonder" status for this crew however, "Wild Gift", the follow-up, is a TRUE classic, a five-star effort all the way......every track is amazing, as John Doe and Exene Cervenka trade vocals in rapid fire succession..."Beyond and Back" is my personal fave ("Now it's five to twelve, shut up and smoke!"), but there are TONS more great songs here, "White Girl", Back 2 the Base" "Year 1", "The Once Over Twice"....tremendous album.

"See How We Are" came along a few years later, we have a vinyl rip at least ("Wild Gift" is a vinyl rip as well), to me it was a "playing out the string" effort, worth a listen, but it's the first two albums that matter.

As for the "X Anthology", this is no typical "Greatest Hits" effort.......stellar live versions (check out "Beyond and Back" /"Back to the Base", stellar!), demos, tracks exclusive to this set, the odd-ball single "Wild Thing" (why it was used in the movie "Major League" rather than, say, ANY other version, I'll never know), and LOTS more....this is essential, and I rarely say that in regards to this type of release.

As far as the missing titles, I'll look around a bit more, I was pretty sure I had them, if not, I will almost guarentee someone comes through with them. For now, though, I hope we have presented one of my fave bands up to your satisfaction!

(scott) This was sent to my email for review from Copenhagen Denmark, a spilt CD of (allegedly, haven't listened yet) good stoner rock (Danish stoner stuff is often QUITE good!).....if they didn't want me to share it, they shouldn't have sent it to me, please feel free to check this out and enjoy, I LOVE when labels/bands send stuff to this site, THAT is how you get heard...the bands in question here are Hjortene and President Fletch.....here's the info as it was sent to me.....

None of these bands are wet behind the ears on Denmark’s stoner/punk scene. No, Hjortene and President Fetch have big ol’ hairy balls when it comes to rockin’ solid in the underground.  

President Fetch is in fact the oldest still existing punk band in Denmark, and have shredded since 1987. Hjortene has been in a consistent trio line up since 2004.

Hjortene did a very well received debut album two years ago, which featured VALIENT HIMSELF from VALIENT THORR, LORENZO WOODROSE (BABY WOODROSE). Hjortene supported VALIENT THORR on their German tour, and have toured intensely in Scandinavia - especially Norway.

President Fetch have played all over Europe and are frequent guests and vodka drinking in Finland, and have toured Germany, Holland and Switzerland. They were the first band from the west to play in Poland, after the iron curtain fell. This is their 8th release.

Everything is mastered by the great Flemming Rasmussen (METALLICA) in Sweet Silence Studio.

Part 2 of a Jon S/Big Scott X collaboration

Took me a bit longer to prep my part of this, I hope (I know) that you enjoyed Jon S' cool series of X
bootlegs posted a couple days ago......I have a handful of older boots from the band, who always were one of my favorites....VERY soon, also, I'll get around to posting the studio albums that I have as well as the TREMENDOUS "X Anthology" which is a major gem in itself.

So, I'm really not going to describe each of these shows......I loved X's unique punkabilly, LOVED Exene Cervenka's one of a kind vocals, which she traded off masterfully with John Doe, who was slamming out those one-of-a-kind X -riffs.....and a perfect rhythm section of Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake (HELL yes!), X was one of THE great American bands of the late 70's/early 80's.....my favorite album was BY FAR the masterpiece "Wild Gift", followed by "Los Angeles", both of which are well represented on each of these sets....the latter albums were not as great, but, the songs still translate well on stage......yet ANOTHER one of those bands I wish i could have seen, but these boots could be the next best thing I guess....

I'll have to check, I think I am missing a couple of their later studio albums, when I do THAT post, I'm sure someone (Jon S?) will help me out! Til then rock these boots, they fucking rule!

(Scott) when Jon S sent me these fab X boots today, I was simply going to add mine to them and make a
mega post, but upon checking I just have too many to make it manageable.....so YOU are the winners, you will get his great series of X boots, (great for me as well because I have none of them), then tomorrow or so I'll do up a post with a bunch of MY X stuff, as X was/is always one of my faves and were a fantastic live band (never saw em, but the boots totally SMOKE).......

Some New Punk from Max Raptor

John N sends us this one, some really good slammin punk that sounds like it escaped from 1977.....the band is Ben Winnington on guitar, Matt Stevenson on bass, Wil Ray on vocals, and Pete Reisner on drums. They hail from Burton Upon Trent, Midlands UK, and draw a good bit of influence from, say, Stiff Little Fingers, the Clash, that general crowd.

I see that they have released an EP or two before, haven't heard em, this was my first exposure, but I listened to this one the other day and was impressed enough to post it.....and, as usual, when posting a new release, if anyone takes issue, let me know and it will be removed with quickness. Until then though, this is a pretty good punk stomper/
