First post of 2016

I decided to, while I was waiting for the Uriah Heep FLAC files to split, to throw this together,
VERY little planning went into this, and I'm sure it will show, but I thought this was a fairly amusing idea, maybe you will as well, maybe you won't.

The compilation is called "Battle of the Bands", and what I'm compiling is songs on which bands attack or insult other performers........sometimes it goes only one way, sometimes there is some back-and-forth stuff, I know hip hop artists engage in slamming each other all the time, but I wanted to do one with rock bands. Let's look at what we got here.......

Well, I wanted to start out with something really retro, so I was looking for a copy of Jerry Lee Lewis' "It Wouldn't Happen To Me", in which Jerry puts both Elvis and Ricky Nelson in thier places, but I couldn't find one, so let's retro it THIS way, kicking off with Gary "US" Bonds "Copy Cat" in which he blasts Chubby Checker and Bobby Darren for trying to "cop" his "groove".....always liked some of Bonds's stuff, and this shot is right on the money......"Copy cats don't last long" is the ultimate decision here, let's allow history to simply decide who "won" this "battle".

One of the most bitter musical "wars", of course, came after the demise of the Beatles......Paul
McCartney fired the first shot on his "Ram" album with "Too Many People".....it's a fairly veiled swipe at John Lennon, but there is nothing veiled about Lennon's response, "How Do You Sleep?", which goes for the jugular......"those freaks was right when they said you was dead".......pretty venomous, and a really cool song.

Perhaps the most well known song of this nature is Lynyrd
Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama", which is a full blown answer to Neil Young's scathing "Southern Man"......"Well I heard Mr Young sing about us, I heard ol' Neil put us down.....well I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow"......and, cool guy that he has always been, Young LOVED it, saying he'd MUCH rather listen to this than to "Southern Man"......Young will always be the TRUE Godfather of Cool......

My personal favorite "battle", I guess, would have to start with the Sex Pistols attack on the New York Dolls, in which they cop "Looking For a Kiss" and "Pills" while slamming the Dolls as "faggots"......Johnny Thunders slugged back with the Heartbreakers great "London Boys", in which they swipe "Pretty Vacant", refer to the Pistols as "faggots", and take some great lyrical swipes such as "You need an escort to take a piss, he holds your hand and he shakes your dick"......I declare Thunders the winner in this one, I think.

Pavement's classic "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" album took a shot at Stone Temple Pilots, but it
was nothing compared to the wonderful slash they gave to Smashing Pumpkins (song: "Range Life)...."Out on Tour with thte Smashing Pumpkins, natures kids, they ain't got no function, I don't understand what they mean, and I could really give a fuck"........perfect by any measure.

Next up we have Foo Fighters' not-to-well masked shot at Courtney Love (although it doesn NOT mention her by name, it is obvious whom Dave Grohl is referring: "Am I the only one to see your rehearsed insanity?")......maybe Courtney tried to swipe back but sometimes with her, well, ya know, it's kinda hard to tell.

Recently discussed on this very blog was the rift between The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols.....there is an entire film dedicated to this thing, someone posted a link to the film in my Brian Jonestown post, the short version here is that The Dandy Warhols (I HAVE TO get a post done on them sometime soon) fired the first salvo with "Not If You Were the Last Junkie On Earth", which the BJM followed up with "Not if You Were the Last Dandy On Earth"......they are here, back to back, and I guess you can declare a winner if you wish.

The last one I have here is pretty lame, but I thought I'd toss it up here to show how weak this stuff
can be without any real context......New Radicals had a single entitled "You Get What You Give" (who the FUCK are the New Radicals?) which contains the lyrics,

"Health insurance rip off lying
FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson,
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes
Run to your mansions
Come around
We'll kick your ass in!"........

Sounds forced, fake, and stupid, just to show that if you attempt to attack another in song, at least be established and have a HISTORY with your adversary, or else you come off looking every bit as stupid as The New Radicals did here......

Anyway, this was all off the top of my head.......any of you guys got anymore songs that attack other artists that I forgot? I'm sure there areplenty, enough to make another comp......maybe one of you hip-hop fans could do one up on those guys, I know they do it regularly, but, of course, that's hardly the Big Man's forte........enjoy, comment, or disregard, I'm still here and will remain here.....

Happy Motherfucking New Year!
