Queens of the Stone Age Part 2

Great weekend!!!! TWO wins by the Royals in the ALCS, a good win by Ohio State, and the Vikings defense looked superb against the Chiefs as they won as well! Great stuff, now I'd like to see the Cubbies advance to to the world series versus the Royals, that would be great, so let's see tonight if thy can even up THEIR series.... other than that, great efforts by the Buckeyes, Vikings, and especially the Royals who showed exceptional fortitude in coming back in Game 2 when David Price had perplexed them for most of the game.......shades of the great 1985 club!

So, how did you like the first part of the Queens saga? If you're a longtime fan of them, it's likely old stuff to you (maybe not that fab split with the great Beaver), but if you are new to the Queens, this should be a cool new discovery for ya....hope ya enjoy the rest, the Queens were a significant band of the 2000's, and, as I said before, I think this is the type of thing that will be influential and be appreciated much more in the future.

Picking up where we left off, lets begin with another EP, from 2004, "Stone Age Complication". A fine collection of rarities and B-Sides, this six-track gem is a must for fans.....a cover of the Kinks "Who Will Be the Next In Line", also a fine cover of Subhumans "Wake Up Screaming", and a third cover, the Cramps "Most Exalted Potentate of Love"........also some other original material best of which I think is a cool remix of "No One Knows".

2005 brought us "Lullabies to Paralyze", a workmanlike effort that isn't essential, but isn't bad either....a 2 disc effort which features a live disc, this is perhaps the weakest Queens studio effort, but there are some standout, uniquely Queens tunes, "Medication", "That's a Killer Scene You Got There Man", "Tangled Up In Plaid".......a fan of the band (myself) wouldn't be without it, for a dabbler, I'm not so sure. The second disc, the live effort from an Atlanta show, is decent, and features a smoking "Song For the Dead".

2007's "Era Vulgaris" brought us a true comeback, a stunning effort in my opinion."Turning of the
Screw", "River in the Road", "Sick Sick Sick" are standouts, but this is a fine and underrated album. I wouldn't dismiss it no matter what my feelings on the band were.....a really good one.

Most recently the "band" (not really the right term, given the shifting lineups and countless guest appearances, but that is QOTSA in a nutshell) has given us "Like Clockwork", 2013, and it is quite a good effort as well......Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor and others make appearances on this one, I think it's also an under-appreciated album, "Keep Your Eyes Peeled" and "My God is the Sun" are standouts.

I think I'll wrap this part up today..... I have to go find my bootlegs in the other room, and I just remembered that I also have the "Deluxe Editions", released later, of the debut and "Rated R"..... likely I will just post the extra tracks from those two, you can edit it however you prefer..... we'll wrap this up later in the week with part 3, but IMHO, Queens of the Stone Age rank with The White Stripes, Sleater Kinney, the Black Keys, and a handful of others as the best and most innovative rock bands of the decade of the 2000's...... am I right or wrong?

Queens of the Stone Age Part 1

Who is up for a multi part Queens of the Stone Age extravaganza? Hell I sure am.., Instrumental in the great modern genre we call "stoner rock", my personal opinion is this stuff will sound even better in the future, much like the early 70s psych that I love so much sounds so great now.

Vocalist/guitarist/pianist Josh Homme formed the Queens after the breakup of Kyuss, utilizing the talents of multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuen, bassist/keyboardist Michael Shuman, guitarist/keyboardist Dean Fertita, and (later addition) drummer Jon Theodore. They've also utilized many guest musicians and collaborators, which has led to the "anything goes" fomat for which they are known. Frankly, and as would be expected, their stuff can be quite "hit or miss", similar, maybe to Flaming Lips in the sense that they will try pretty much anything, which of course is admirable.

Looks like the earliest work I have from them is a split disc from 1997, with early Queens material and three Kyuss tracks from the final days of that band. Their "proper" debut, a self-titled gem was released in 1998, VERY Kyuss-like and good, strange hard rock with the prerequisite goofy song titles ("How to Handle a Rope", "I Was a Teenage Hand Model")..

"Rated R" was released in 2000, a classic then and a classic now....Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford loans his talents to the amazing "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" (TOTAL lyrics: "Nicotine, vicodine, valium, marijuana, ecstacy and alcohol.......c-c-c-c-coCAINE") repeated over an over.....funny: Wal Mart suspected the song promoted drug use.......hey, REALLY?.....there is a TON of good shit here, "I Think I Lost My Headache", " "Better Living Through Chemistry" and more, it's a classic of the 2000's and of early REAL stoner rock

In 2002 they released the amazing "Songs For the Deaf", a great and underappreciated album if ever there was one......remarkably cohesive and challenging, there is GREAT shit on this (dare I say) 5-star album......"Song For the Dead", "First it Giveth", "The Sky is Fallin".......hell it's ALL great....my favorite QOTSA album by a wide margin....you WANT this if you are not familiar.

Also including a semi-rare split Ep with the great  13eaver, whom have been featured on this blog before, I forget when, check and see if the links are still up, they are/were really great as well....

This is only the beginning, I think this is their best work, but we will touch on their later albums and some boots and stuff soon...... great, great innovative band, and both "rated r" and "songs for the deaf" are classics that should be in ANY responsible household.

HELLLLLL Yes, KYUSS!

Man, do I love me some Kyuss, always one of my faves, it continues to amaze me how many of my all-time fave bands (Dozer, Fu Manchu, QOTSA, many more) that I have not yet got around to profiling here, just shows that maybe I'll be around for a while longer.......

Hell, yes, Kyuss.....blasting out of Palm Beach California, Kyuss were originally singer John Garcia, guitarist Josh Homme, bassist Chris Cockrell, , drummer Brant Bjork , and guitarist Nick Oliveri  ..They released an EP, (prior to Oliveri's joining) "Sons of Kyuss", and then shortened thier name to the more accessible "Kyuss"... the EP is quite good, in fact, quite a portent of things that would be coming. Thier sweet blend of heavy metal and hard edged punk gave birth to what we might eventually refer to as "Desert Surf" (some do) or more commonly, "Stoner Rock".... my understanding is that this EP has never been "officially" released, but bootlegs are fairly common...... please give it a listen to understand just where this talented bunch were coming from.

The first album, "Wretch" came out in 1991, a lot of the material from the EP is repeated here, as well as freakier workouts such as "Son of a Bitch" and "The Law".....Cockrell would play on only a couple of tracks here and then leave the band.

1992 saw perhaps their top effort, "Blues For the Red Sun", which gets more and more acidic....Homme plugged down tuned guitars into bass amps to obtain the very unique guitar sound, lyrics are often indecipherable, and, in just my opinion, this album IS the foundation for modern day stoner rock. The wah-wah, the distortion, the Sabbath-like riffage, bands such as Monster Magnet or Orange Goblin would be unimaginable without it. From "Green Machine" to "Thing Song" to "Mondo Generator" this is an absolute stone-cold classic album, that no home should be without.

They continued to develop and progress even more with 1994's "Welcome to Sky Valley", which is broken up into Pink Floyd-like "Movements", which IMO work perfectly.... some pressings (including this one, unfortunately) are programmed into 11 tracks, the better ones are programmed into only three, as this works (again, like a Floyd album) MUCH MUCH better as an album listened to in it's complete form. "Demon Cleaner", "Whitewater", "Space Cadet".......all great, as is the entire album....."Blues For the Red Sun" was a 5-star effort.......in my opinion, this was as well.

".....And the Circus Leaves Town" is a huge letdown, the band was running out of ideas and was in the process of transforming into Queens of the Stone Age......"Hurricane" and "One Inch Man" are reasonable, the 34-minute "Spaceship Landing", maybe not as much.

In 1997 to drive the transformation home, they released a split EP "Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age", the highlight being Homme's "Born to Hula", and a cool cover of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void".....I enjoye this album even though I am not generally much on the splits stoner bands put out, this one works as it shows "where" Kyuss was going.......

To do this correctly, I'd now do a post on Queens of the Stone Age, but that's even more complex and I have a bunch of boots, might take a while to get it together.......and there is another factor......

"The Desert Sessions" series is an important part of the Kyuss story, although not Kyuss per se.....at various times there was participation from all the various members of Kyuss, from Mark Lanegan, PJ Harvey, Twiggy Ramirez, and many more....these are all-star jam sessions to be sure, I know many who hate these, I can't see why, there are some remarkable moments on them......I think if you have any love for Kyuss and thier imaginative hard rock at all, please find time for the "Desert Sessions" series which I have included here......not exactly typical recordings, but I really like most of them, I'm not going to go into much detail on them because you get the idea, but please give these a try also.

Fatso Jetson

Since they have recently split a disc with Herba Mate (see yesterday), might as well get introduced to
these fellows if you are unfamiliar.... from Palm Beach California, another that worship at the altar of Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age, which make them a prefect compliment to split a CD with Herba Mate..... anyways....here is most of the work from Fatso Jetson that I can locate.... hope you guys enjoy it, there is some good stuff here, for fans of West Coast stoner rock at least!

Former memebers of  (the great) Yawning Man Mario Lalli and Tony Lalli joined forces with Tony Torny to form Fatso Jetson in 1994......their debut was "Stinky Little Gods", a unknown somewhat-classic of Dessert Surf......it's not their best effort, for my cash, but itis worth a listen: the fab finale "Corn on the Macabre" gets the job done, as do several other stoner/burner numbers here.....it's a good album, good starting point.

In 1997 they came up with "Power of Three", a fine album of power trio/stoner rock, LOTS of oddball shit here such as "Ugly Man, Ugly Name", "Orgy Porgy" (Named for a term in "Brave New World" what could be better?), and "Phil the Hole".... simply put, what Herba Mate=Kyuss, Fatso Jetson=QOTSA..... pretty simple really, but I do love all these bands, really.

For their next disc "Flames For All", they added second guitarist Gary Arse, formerly of Yawning Man, and turn out another winning effort, perhaps their best (I'd say so...), "Fucked Up and Famous", "Untimely Death of the Keyboard Player", and "Icon To Ex-Con" are perhaps the high points, not only of the album, but arguably of the career.

2001's "Toasted" is also a fine album, albeit returning to the power trio format of the earlier efforts... Good hard rocking stuff, the definition of "stoner rock" .....what else would you make of titles such as "Too May Skulls", "She's So Borg", or "Tutta Dorma".... frankly, if you like this stuff  (and I DO), you wil want this one as well.

2002's "Cruel and Delicious" added some other musicians, ie keyboards and the like..... well, what are ya gonna do? It's "growth", I guess, shorter songs, more fleshed out sound.... not as great an album, but there ya go.... there are plenty of good, listenable moments here, like "Drinkin Mode", "Party Pig", Mountain of Debt"...... frankly, another good LP, these guys were really underappreciated.

They released a 2007 Live disc, and the most recent release I happen to have is "Archaic Volumes" from 2010 after all these years, these burnouts still know on which side their bread is buttered.... not at all a bad CD, "Golden Age of Cell Block Slang, "Jolting Tales of Tension", and "Play Dead" stand up  with all of their earlier "classics"......

These guys were fairly under-the radar masters of dessert surf/stoner rock..... nothing here as great as you might find on the greater albums of Kyuss or QOTSA, but still, this is pretty good stuff, if you are a fan of stoner-rock (NOT really "stoner metal", there's a diff) you will likely enjoy this...and if ya DO, make certain to go to the Herba Mate post and check out their new split with THAT band, whom both of have agreed to share with us for free so we can check it out...... cool.

I THINK that this is their complete catalogue, if anyone has anything else please share....this was/is a decent stoner rock band, I would classify them as a poor-man's QOTSA, and that is no insult....

Wow, for such a huge (and pretty good) catalogue, these dudes are fairly unknown......not bad at all, ya just never know...... if ya like these, by chance, please go to the Herba Mate post and  check out their NEW split CD with that band, as they have generously allowed us to preview free of charge.... pretty decent stoner rock, not the world's greatest, but it will do.... anyway, SIT ON MY FACE, NANCY GRACE!!!! The best Mondo Generator Post, ever

Something of a stoner rock super project, many of the "legends" of the genre have appeared under the monkier of Mondo Generator. I'll try to summarize their history as best I can with some help from Wikipedia. Formed in 1997 as song of a Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss side-project by Nick Oleveri, Brandt Bjork, Josh Homme, Rob Oswald and Karl Doyle, they threw together an album entitled "Cocaine Rodeo".....if you didn't know any better you'd simply swear it was a great lost QOTSA album, down to the titles ("Another Tension Head", "Miss Mary Gets a Boob Job", "Dead Insects".......you get the idea. The band/project emerged a few years laer with "A Drug Problem That Never Existed" (detect any themes running through this?).....this time getting help from stoner notables such as Mark Lanegan and Molly McGuire as well as the previous participants, might as well toss up some of the goofier titles for ya just fer a laugh: "Meth I Hear You Callin'", "Girls Like Christ".......I happen to love stuff like this, but you know, sometimes the "drug-fueled "zaniness" " tends to feel a tiny bit forced. Whatever.

So, evidently, Oliveri was fired from QOTSA by Homme and took on the Mondo Generator moniker for his own.....resulting in a more "permanent" band type thing rather than simply a Kyuss/QOTSA offshoot project, and in 2007 the album "Dead Planet" resulted....I have kind of mixed opinions on it, while it actually doesn't really "get it done" for me as much as the previous two albums, it does have more of it's own "identity" and really isn't bad. Not a "future forgotten classic", but not bad. I also have the Australian version, entitled "Dead Planet: Sonicslowmotiontrails", which has NO additional material and merely revises the track sequence, why I have both I'll never know, but I am not going to put the Aussie version up, same music, actually......

Since then they have put up some sporadic efforts, 2010's EP "Dog Food", and a VERY recent effort (just last year!) "Hell Comes To Your Heart" which I am fairly certain that although I have it back there, I don't think I have ever listened to it, so I will withhold the critique......let me throw in Oliveri's 2009 solo effort "Death Acoustic" (really surprisingly good) and you about have it.

I try to hit on a lot of different segments of the music I listen to with these posts. Sometimes I am putting up someone like Ian Hunter (yesterday), for my money one of the most important and significant figures in rock n roll history, or, like today,someone like Mondo Generator, who in ten years will be 99% forgotten........but there is some good stuff on these albums, obviously if you are a fan of Kyuss or Queens of the Stone Age you'll want to check these out to "complete the picture" if you haven't previously.

The best Slo Burn post ever

At least "tied" for the "best", because they were short lived and put out only this "album", which in fact is an EP coupled with some other demo tracks..... the thing is I always REALLY liked it. Just listened to it again today, and to me it's kind of an unappreciated stoner classic. Singer John Garcia, guitarist Chris Hale, bassist Damon Garrison, and drummer Brady Houghton made out the lineup, and the sound is VERY Kyuss-like, which is perhaps why some don't like the album (it's VERY VERY Kyuss like!).... they released the four-track EP "Amusing the Amazing" in 1996, and later editions of it turned up with the five tracks added on from their earlier demo.... I've never heard a live recording, I hear that some do exist, and I'd LOVE to hear one if anyone has one. Anyway, Garcia broke up the band and went on to sing with two other bands whom I have featured on the blog before, Unida and Hermano, I think this ranks somewhere in that basic chain..... for being a pieced together "album", it flows pretty well, and rocks from top to bottom. You're going to like it if you like Kyuss, Unida, Hermano, and all the usual suspects. See ya tomorrow!
