The Black Explosion

Ready for some great Swedish stoner-psych? The Black Explosion comes to the rescue, kind of reminds me some (if I had to think of a comparison) perhaps with Wo-Fat, whom you know I love..... so, anyway, they released "Servitors of the Outer Gods" in 2012, a collection of ten short (relatively, for the genre) hard rocking tunes, all of which are pretty damn good, "Sun Eater" and "Wake Up" are highlights, maybe, but it's all pretty good.

The follow up was "Elements of Doom", a which is a bit more psychedelic with stuff like "Mothership" and a 14-minute "We Will Fall".......I prefer this album, but don't overlook either, stoner rock fans, these are good.....

Now, here's a secret. Don't tell anyone, scheduled for June 24 release is "Atomic Zod War"......I understand it's even a bit more on the psych side, especially the freaky leadoff track "Paralyzed".....if you look around, say, in the comments section, you may find a link to it, shhhhhh.....as with all new releases, if there are any objections it will be happily removed.

SERVITORS OF THE OUTER GODS-01 Two Hours Later/02 Out of Control/03 Wake Up/04 Sun

Locust on the Saddle

I don't want to become TOO submission-dependent, so I try to put a few of my own discs up eah day as well.....how about, from Hungary, 2008, Locust on the Saddle's only effort (at least that I know of) "The Alpha Mantis" ......pretty solid doom/stoner/sludge, if you like the stuff we generally post in these genres, this one will probably be one you'll enjoy as well.... nothing spectacular, but a good (3.5 star) album, at least for stoner rock fans........ kind of rare (I think), so check it out!

THE ALPHA MANTIS-01 Tiro Incognito/02 Field of Ration/03 Burnout/04 Get Back/05 Casual Tease/06 Stereotypia/07 Waste of Time/08 Holy Banishment-Bank Holiday/09 Breaking the Unwritten/10 Never Enough

Would I steer you wrong on stoner/doom/psych? of course not!

Mushroom River Band

The two LP's released by the Mushroom River Band during their period of activity, 1996-2004... they were a good stoner/metal band. Vocalist Spice of The Spiritual Beggars did time in both units, explaining the somewhat similar sound of these two Swedish bands.

"Music For the World Beyond" was released in 2000, as I said before, something not unlike Spiritual Beggars (no insult there, they were great).... a solid effort with tracks like "Mud-Crusher", "More Beer", and "Addicted"......

Two years later they released a similar album, perhaps a bit less spacey and more metallic, "Simsalabim". "My Vote is Blank", and "Proud of Being Cool" are standouts.... after this I guess they called it a day, although there are a couple of EP's out there that I've heard of but don't have... Studkid?

Well, there are the first pair for today, gotta lot of spare time this evening as usual, lets see what else myself and the the world's greatest submission team can come up with for the rest of your Saturday.

Dozer

Really (and I checked), how the hell has this blog went on for so long, with its semi-theme of stoner
rock, and NOT have, at anytime, a full feature on Swedish greats Dozer? (Fu Manchu, either, but that's another matter).......well, anyway......once they create the Stoner rock Hall of Fame, Dozer will be admitted, with their loud, brutish, crucnching- kick -in -the-guts rock.

Formed in 1995 in Borlange Sweden, from vocalist/guitarist Fredrik Nordin, guitarist Tommi Holappa, basasist Johan Rockner, and drummer Olle Marthens...... there have been changes in the rhythm section since, but the band's sound is based around the roaring guitars of Nordin and Holappa, as well as Nordin's growing, snarling vocals.

The first release, 2000's "In the Tail of a Comet", while very rough, still shows the potential of what was to come......allegedly it was recorded for less than $1000, and I could likely believe that....still it booms out power with blasters like "Lightyears Ahead", "Supersoul", and "High Roller".

The following year they would unleash "Madre de Dios", which spaces/psychs out the sound a bit in lieu of the straight up pounding rock of the earlier album......this is a good one, flows right through from start to finish....."Let the Shit Roll", Octanoid", "Earth Yeti", "Thunderbolt".......perhaps their best album, one of the essentials of the early 2000's stoner scene.

Album #3, "Call it Conspiracy", is nearly as good if not better......."The Hills Have Eyes" hits like a slap in the face, "Blacklight Revolution" and "Lightning Stalker" are as good as any stoner rock of the era......these guys were NOT exactly "Sons of Kyuss", thier sound owed a bit more to the Five Horse Johnson/Spiritual Beggars sound (a BIT less spacey, a bit bluesier)....something wrong with THAT?

"Through the Eyes of  Heathens" continues the trend, good, solid, hard riffing heavy ended stoner rock, THE sound of the early 00's.......I'm unsure, I think there is some "concept" at work here, it's not something most of the stoner bands did real well, that "conceptual" thing.....but, anyway, it still rocks like fuck, "Until man Exists No More", "Omega Glory", "man of Fire"......it's good stuff, and to these ears it SORT OF fits together in some kind of cohesive manner....

The most recent release from these bad boys came from 2008, "Beyond Colossal", fine album as well,
making them basically 4/5 if you don't consider the debut to be great.......their lyrical themes continue to get more "out there' (HEY, STONER ROCK MAAAAAN), but, seriously, great stuff, "The Flood", "Message Throught the Horses", lots more.....guys you done damn good.

But, as Blue Oyster Cult would say, wait! There's more......how about the TWO DISC Dozer Rarities, which contains ALL KINDSA cool shit, from various splits (Demon Cleaner, Los Natas (one of my faves, remember?), Brain Police), also demos  and B-sides, not to mention and oddball cover of Devo's "Mongoloid".

Also a couple of other things, Dozer contributed a disc to the "Fuzzbox Finest Series" (as did Wrench the other day) which contains a handful of tracks that are not on any of the other discs here.....also, I KNOW I have a couple of their EP's, etc, around here, just not finding them right now, but hopefully this can get you started!

Wrench

A fairly difficult to locate, at least for me, band from Australia which is certainly one of the "Sons of Kyuss", making it a bit MORE difficult is that there are multiple bands that use this moniker. I have some stuff here from one of the "other" Wrench's, maybe at some point we'll host a battle of the Wrenches?

Anyway, here's what I have (not as much as I'd like) from the Wrecnh that I'm focusing on right now.....singer Nigel Ryan, bassist/keyboardist John McNichol, drummer Chris McNichol, and guitarist Craig Elliott......obviously they've heard a Kyuss record or two before, but there isn't a damn thing wrong with that. What I have is a fine album "Oscillator Blues" (2001), which features plenty of loud slamming numbers: "Gravitorn", Humanoid" and most every track here....

They have a few more albums that I don't happen to own (help, anyone?), but I do have an ancient internet creation that I grabbed YEARS ago, "Fuzzbox Finest Series", which featured about 7 or 8 great stoner bands, of which Wrench was one......there is a BIT of overlap with "Oscillator", but I really can't be too picky here.....good stoner band, If mark Eveleigh is still out there, he'd be a solid bet to have their other 2-3 albums. Mark?

Crack Whore Society

Yeah, like I'm gonna pass on a band called "Crack Whore Society".... this one's been sitting on the shelf for a while, seems like about time to drag it out. This crew is from Germany, as far as I know, this self-titled release is their one and only, a nice blend of hardcore punk/stoner riffing......

Crack Whore Society were (are?) singer Patrick Schauer, guitarist Mario Bender, guitarist Kai Mohr, and drummer Marco Haas.

Well, with a moniker like this, they are going to attempt to "shock" obviously, so be sure and check "Heroin Youth", "Crack baby", and "Sweet Gasoline"....... actually this is a pretty fair album, kind of a curiosity, but still a rocking effort, quite enjoyable.

CRACK WHORE SOCIETY- 01 Caught By the Light/ 02 Lowrider/ 03 Sickness Kills Our Blues/ 04 The Grindking/ 05 Goodbye/ 06 High on the Heels of Love/ 07 No Pleasure/ 08 Crack baby/ 09 Neptun/ 10 My Friend/ 11 Same Old Song/ 12 Ain't No Track/ 13 Heroin Youth/ 14 Sweet Gasoline

For Studboy, forgot I had this, live Sungrazer

Forgot all about having this one, senility is coming on quickly, but if you've not heard this, Studboy, you're
gonna freak..... a Sungrazer set from 6/10/11 (my son Grant's 14th birthday!).... it's called "Duna Jam, Somewhere in Sardinia", it's pretty damn good (as are their studio efforts) with the same combination of riffing stoner rock/hypnotic psych...... I really hope you see this after the cool Sungrazer studio stuff you sent me the other day. Great band!

DUNA JAM SOMEWHERE IN SARDINIA-01 If/ 02 Somo/ 03 Octo/ 04 Mirador/ 05 Zero Zero/ 06 Common Believer/ 07 Behind

Sorry I forgot about this one, I would have given it a proper placement with the rest of their stuff, this is a great band...... hope everyone checked out the post the other day, as well as checking out this rarity!

Switchblade Jesus

Don't want to stray TOO far away from some bone-crushing stoner metal, as far as I know this is the only release from Corpus Christi Texans, Switchblade Jesus. Skull-bashing riffs, fuzzed-up amplifier frying stoner jams, might put one in mind of Orange Goblin/Fu Manchu stoner greatness, or even a bit skuzzier stuff like Viking Skull. Honestly, if you like this kind of thing, every track gets it done, but the best is the closer, "Oblivion" which is nearly seven minutes in length and builds to a positively ear-splitting climax. Good album for fans of stoner/metal, and if you AREN'T one, well......

SWITCHBLADE JESUS-01 Into Nothing/ 02 Bastard Son/ 03 The Wolves/ 04 Sick Mouth/ 05 Equinox/ 06 Renegade Riders/ 07 Copperhead/ 08 Oblivion

Some cool stuff from Walden Rekords

(scott) This was sent to my email for review from Copenhagen Denmark, a spilt CD of (allegedly, haven't listened yet) good stoner rock (Danish stoner stuff is often QUITE good!).....if they didn't want me to share it, they shouldn't have sent it to me, please feel free to check this out and enjoy, I LOVE when labels/bands send stuff to this site, THAT is how you get heard...the bands in question here are Hjortene and President Fletch.....here's the info as it was sent to me.....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

None of these bands are wet behind the ears on Denmark’s stoner/punk scene. No, Hjortene and President Fetch have big ol’ hairy balls when it comes to rockin’ solid in the underground.

President Fetch is in fact the oldest still existing punk band in Denmark, and have shredded since 1987. Hjortene has been in a consistent trio line up since 2004.

Hjortene did a very well received debut album two years ago, which featured VALIENT HIMSELF from VALIENT THORR, LORENZO WOODROSE (BABY WOODROSE). Hjortene supported VALIENT THORR on their German tour, and have toured intensely in Scandinavia - especially Norway.

President Fetch have played all over Europe and are frequent guests and vodka drinking in Finland, and have toured Germany, Holland and Switzerland. They were the first band from the west to play in Poland, after the iron curtain fell. This is their 8th release.

Everything is mastered by the great Flemming Rasmussen (METALLICA) in Sweet Silence Studio.

Live video from Hjortene’s recording session (the track Mand I Sort):

The split-LP will be out in 500 individually colored vinyls on the 3rd of June, and will be available on these bandcamp sites:

Sungrazer

This is a fine contribution from Studboy, whom I have been referring to as "Henrick Morch", because that's what his e-mails say his name is..... I suspect an insurmountable language/computer thing, proving again that computers aren't as smart as they think they are.... also Studboy is from Denmark, not Russia or whatever guessed, proving that I, also, am not as smart as I think.

Anyway, three great albums from Sungrazer. From Holland, formed in 2009, Sungrazer were guitarist/vocalist Rutger Smeets, bassist/vocalist Sander Haagmans, and drummer Hans Mulders. They released two find albums, as well as a split with The Machine, before disbanding.

Their first (self titled) album was released in 2010.....I always liked it a good deal, it's songs range from hard/heavy Fu Manchu/Kyuss stoner stabbings to long, trippy jams.... one of the best albums of 2010 for my money (it made my list I remember), highly recommended for fans of stoner rock or psychedelia.

The next year they released "Mirador", wonderfully trippy as well, again combining riff rockers like "Octo" with trippier stuff like the very good (and 13-plus minute) "Behind". Info is pretty scarce on these guys, so I really don't know what caused the dissolution, but I do know this, these are two goddamn EXCELLENT albums of stoner rock, a bit more psychedelic than the usual fare, but simply tremendous musicianship by all three members.

The band also released a split album with The Machine. As far as the three Sungrazer tracks go, again, they are all quite good, in particular "Flow Through a Good Story".

Good band.... really like all of these a lot and always have. Highly, highly recommended!  And thanks to Studboy, I'll get your name right in the future, keep em coming !

Mr Plow

During my taxing work day, I let my I Pod run free, it's a classic edition (160 gb I think) that holds about 1500 albums, which I loaded about ten years ago..... I've never changed it, I listen to newer stuff on a newer I Pod, and, well, who gives a fuck? Anyway, when I've got my OLD one cranking, sometimes something will come on and I'll be like "Why the fuck did I waste space on THAT?"....or, sometimes, such as last week with the Holograms, my reaction is more "DAMN I had forgotten all about that album....that fucking thing is great!"

So it was today with Mr. Plow's "Head On", from 1999.....that thing came on and damn near knocked me over with a blast of sledgehammer stoner rock. Mr. Plow came out of Houston Texas in the late 90's/early 00's, and this album was a killer.......from the slap in the face opener "Right On" through the end of the lengthy workout "Molly", it never lets up......also "Mexican Smoke" and "Travis Bickle" show a knack for intelligent songwriting.

Mr Plow consisted of, and you know I wouldn't make this up, vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Plow, vocalist/guitarist Justin Plow, bassist Greg Plow, and drummer Dave Plow.....they sure as hell could bring the noise, and seem forgotten. At least, they were by me.

So once I got home I dug out the other two albums of theirs that I have......these are pretty good too. The sophomore effort, "Cock Fights and Pony Racin'", contains more heavy stoner gems, "Festivus", "From the Mouth of Gandalf", "Louder Than Larry".....I recommend this as well.

Finally, the third effort, "Asteroid 25399"  (2006) is not quite up to the standard set earlier, but this is no slouch either....."Malachi" and "Telepathic Butterflies" stand out, again, not QUITE as good as the first two, but if you liked them, this one is worth a spin as well.

Don't know what happened to them after that.....if they have any more releases, I can't locate them, can't find any breakup information or anything. But I'll tell you this, "Head On" is a no joke piece of stoner rock as good as any from the "golden age" (!) of stoner rock. Not joking, run, don't walk for this one.

HEAD ON-01 Right On/02 Mexican Smoke/03 The Gauntlet/04 Travis Bickle/05 Beat Down/06 Truck
Stop Lovin'/07 Molly

COCK FIGHTS AND PONY RACIN'-01 Festivus/02 Ode to Carlo/03 Louder Than Larry/04 The Dude/05 Electric Sheep/06 Master Blaster/07 Autozone/08 The Only Reason/09 From the Mouth of Gandalf/10 Hidden Track

ASTEROID 25399-01 Malachi/02 Deadeye Dick/03 Staying Even/04 Ballad of Billy/05 Proteus/06 Ice 9/07 Rosewater/08 Telepathic Butterflies

Good one for ya here, recommended!

Souldiggers Band, Redux

Got several things I'd like to get to this evening, let's see how many I get to.....well, excellent submissions continue to pour in, and I WILL get to them, as soon as possible, and thanks a million for each and every one of them. last week (or so) I posted the first album from The Souldiggers Band, 2012's Search For Greater Things. If you recall, Souldiggers Band are a pair of gents from St. Petersburg Russia, and the first LP spit out some fairly good grungy stoner blues, more than adequate for that type of thing.

Well, the follow up ("Second Coming") kindly submitted by a reader by the name of Henrick Morch (thanks Henrick!), released after a threee year break, is better if anything. More skull-bashing riffing and growling vocals, perfectly wonderful for all of you hard rock n roll lovers out there. Play loud, and thanks again to Henrick Morch for sending this one.

SECOND COMING-01 Intro/02 Son of a Bitch/03 Blissout/04 Curious Girl/05 Everybody Lies/06 Slow N Lazy/07 Last Hope Rising/08 No Way Back/09 Spring Song/10 TKRV Sundown/11 Useless Days/12 If I Had the Time/13 Jacaranda (Long Awaited Rain)

Keep the submissions coming, folks, I think this one comes to us from Russia or that general neighborhood.....that, again, is how this SHOULD work and thrills me that so many of us are helping each other to obtain, individually, "the" perfect record collection!

Souldiggers Band

This is a good album from The Soul Digger's band, ca. 2012.... I know they released at least a second effort, but I can't find it/don't have it, so hopefully someone will come up with it. Why? because this slab is a fine piece of hard/stoner rock, very good, bluesy, sort of memorable of maybe Five Horse Johnson..... it's a really good disc, for all you rock n rollers, give it a listen please. Can't say much more, but this is one you guys should enjoy!

Santoro

Boring day, dragging out some of this, some of that.....here's another obscurity for you from the land of Argentina, who brought us the great Los Natas (you remember Los Natas don't you? one of the great stoner rock bands of all time, on whom I did an extensive multiple part post THAT NONE OF YOU DOWNLOADED, grrrrrr)......anyway, the comparison to Los Natas is obvious here, also Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age......they DO sing in Spanish, I know that is a turn off to some of ya, myself and my homeboy Brian are both huge fans of non-English language (the music HAS to do the talking if the lyrics are in a language you can't understand!), don't miss this one (like you did Los Natas, I posted about 20 or so Los Natas albums (their whole catalogue), I think this one album is the complete works of Santoro, so I implore you to give this a listen.

On this 1999 release, the Santoro lineup was vocalist Jose "El Toppo" Armetta, guitarist Sergio Chotsourian, bassist Gonzalo "Crudo" Villagra, an drummer Gonzalo Espejo. They might not be the most imaginative stoner band ever (hell, maybe they are, too, if I was ambitious enough to translate the lyrics), but they sound great, as I said, very reminiscent of their countrymen Los Natas (seriously, one of my twenty favorite bands of all time in any genre, that's why it amazed me no one bit on it), and the Kyuss/QOTSA comparison is quite accurate as well.

If I am wrong and they DID issue any material after this one, I'd LOVE to hear it......maybe John N or stoner rock kingpin Mark Eveligh (where have YOU been, Mark? Hope all is well) or even my amigo Jose or one of the Spanish all-star blogging team knows something about it.....anyway LISTEN TO THIS it is really good stoner rock, and for what else could one ask?

Again, I am HIGHLY recommending this one.
Don't contact me in 2 years asking for a re-up, get it NOW, you
will like this one!

John N amazes me AGAIN

Well, I thought I had stumped you all with my post of stoner semi-unknowns Jack and the Bearded
Fishermen......I requested help finding their other LP's, REALLY expecting none.....along comes John N, who seemingly owns every CD ever made, with a batch of stuff from Jack & Co.

Of course, I am uncertain if this is their entire catalogue, but I'm guessing MAYBE it is, since it even includes a split single (with Hombre Malo)......I'm gonna go see if I can find track lists for these, I'll be RIGHT back!

HUNTING ISN'T EASY (WHEN DOGS BECOME WOLVES)- 01 Intro/02 Well Done Black Wolves/03 Good Bye Black Wolves/04 Don't Need Friday/05 Lightning Colt/06 Shipwrecked and Survivors

MINOR NOISE-01 Autumn Arrows/02 Low Tide/03 Reminder/04 Minor Noise/05 Inverted Queen/06 Way Out/07 Wet Black Papers/08 Tina/09 White Hours/10 Program

SPLIT SINGLE WITH HOMBRE MALO-01 HOMBRE MALO-A Desert For A Man/02 JACK & THE BEARDED FISHERMEN-Spies of Congress

Thanks a million to John N, I think this fills out the collection, as best as I can tell......for the record, "Hunting" came out in 2009, "Places to Hide" (which I posted last week) is from 2011, as is the split single, and Minor Noise is from 2014......great submission John N, we need more lesser-known stoner rock n roll here!

Jack & the Bearded Fishermen

OK, I'm gonna bet good money that you don't know this one.......from 2011, these guys popped out a few other discs, this is the only one I have ("Places to Hide", from what I read, it's generally considered their best)....hard to find much info on them, but the album is good old noisy stoner/hard psych/sludge, so you know old Uncle Scott is gonna love it.... seriously, a pretty damn good one, please take a chance on it, and IF anyone has any of their other albums, I'd love to hear em.

PLACES TO HIDE-01 Scenario/02 Roam until The End/03 Closed/04 Beginner/05 DF Code/06 Between the Ghosts/07 Invisible Song/08 42 Minutes Later/09 Hands Up Old Man/10 Places to Hide

PLEASE give this a listen, it's a really good one although not so well known....and THAT is what we're here for, right?

Lonely Kamel Redux

Let me point out a helpful hint..... if you wish to contribute
something. please send the links or text or whatever to my email, csgmiller@sbcglobal.net.... if you simply leave them in the comments section, hardly anyone will see them. If you send them to my email, works much better as I can make a full post of it and we can reach a broader audience. Thanks.

That being said, in response to my Lonely Kamel post from a few days ago, (their debut album is all I have), a reader named "Studboy" (I don't make em up) has generously given me links to their other three albums.....haven't gotten to listen to them yet, but I should by tomorrow, looking forward to it. In cases you need a reminder, they are a pretty cool stoner rock band from Oslo Norway, consult the original post if you want any more info.......I converted these to zippylinks, just to make sure they were OK, and they are. Thanks, Studboy, don't be a stranger!
