SCARS re-up by request

Scars was a Scottish post-punk quartet that debuted in 1979 with an excellent single, "Adult/ery" b/w "Horrorshow".  An EP was followed by an LP (both were titled Author! Author!).  Scars made two John Peel sessions and were getting good press.  The single "All About You" became popular.  The band fired singer Robert King and continued as a trio with guitarist Paul Research singing, but the momentum was lost.  King put out one solo single in 1982.  He later became a professor of ancient languages.  Scars bassist John Mackie played in a few other bands, and he and his brother Paul Research became DJs.  Original drummer Calumn MacKay became an engineer and still plays music.  Scars' second drummer Steve McLaughlin became a music producer who has worked with Tom Petty, Sting and others.

Dave Sez shared some Scars rarities here awhile back, and Mike F. requested a re-up.  I have added tracks from videos posted to Youtube by Scoorieboy (John Mackie) and by Vibracobra23. Look up those Youtube user names:  their channels are full of great stuff! Paul Research wrote a band history at his site, scarsresearch.com.



Fast forward two decades:  interest is renewed in the post-punk of the early 80's, and "Horrorshow" is sampled by the trip hop duo Lemon Jelly on their popular "Shouty Track" in 2004.  Paul Research put out the first and only Scars CD in 2007 (also called Author! Author!)  Copies are now scarce and expensive.



Scars reformed for an Edinburgh concert in 2010, and in 2011 they recorded a BBC Session with Marc Riley (wherein Riley admits to stealing a Scars lyric).  Sadly the partnership with Professor King ended again, and King started a new band called Opium Kitchen.  

Scars is an unsung band from a great era.  Paul Research is underrated as an innovative guitarist, and Robert King's lyrics are well-written and inventive.  Adult/ery and She's Alive are stories in song.  Other tunes (like All About You and Leave Me In The Autumn) lean toward an indiepop sound that was successful for U2, the Bunnymen, etc at the start of the 80's; and I think Scars could have been as popular as their contemporaries if they had stayed together.  Earlier songs like Horrorshow and Your Attention Please are outstanding post-punk: sharp-edged, aggressive and striking in their originality.

Forgot about the Purple Helmets, which an Anonymous reader sent me a link for, actually I already had a couple of em..... A Stranglers side-project, The Purple Helmets is an ad hoc band, playing 1960's R and B numbers. The recording line-up was: Jean-Jacques Burnel, Dave Greenfield, John Ellis, Alex Gifford (a member of the Stranglers horn-section) and Manny Elias (drummer with Tears For Fears). The band was ostensibly put together (from an earlier incarnation) so that JJ and Dave could do some gigging between Stranglers projects. There MAY be more out there, but what I have are these two albums, "Ride Again" (1988) and "Rise Again" (1989).... for my dough "Ride" is the better effort, as we get fab covers of SO many great songs, "Over Under Sideways Down", "Tobacco Road", "Wooly Bully"...... not just carbon-cover copies either, reminds me of Bowie's "Pinups" project to a point. "Rise" is good too, though it suffers from a bit lesser of selection, highlights being maybe "Rosalyn", "She's Not There", "Oh Pretty Woman" and at least a few more.... track lists if you're interested:

Been away from the computer this weekend and Monday for the most part, my son had a college visit, my
wife "celebrated" her 49th birthday, which, as always, fell on the date of my father's passing away (this being the 25th anniversary of it actually), so both a busy and emotional time.......I have enough guest posts and guest posted links to fill up a LOT of blog space and I'm gonna do it, Brian has part 4 of his amazing Swans post completed, Cliff gives us another reggae masterpiece, Apantabapanta has started a new, intersting, and unusual project which we will see, but first, let's continue the tradition I started a couple of weeks ago of bringing guests contributed links to the forefront......it came to my slow-witted attention that when one of my great friends like Andie James or Dave Sez  adds a valueable link to the comments section, it may go unnoticed as I shouldn't expect you folks to go back and re-read my comments sections each day......a couple weeks ago I brought a bunch of contributed links to the front page, I have no way to track the download numbers as they are technically not on MY Zippy account, but I don't care.....it makes it EASIER for you guys to get MORE quality music, and THAT is what I care about......btw, the response/reaction to my attempt to better highlight the contributed links was quite favorable, and it is something I will continue to do every couple of  weeks.......hey, I have good ideas sometimes, it just takes them a while to burst through all the sludge......(oh, you say "why is there a picture of former NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER JIM TRESSEL OF FORMER OHIO STATE GREATNESS pictured here? Well, because my son Grant's college visit was at Youngstown State, where Tressel is now the University President, I got to meet him and talk to him for a few minutes, which, to me, was a thrill, a privlege, an honor, and a pleasure, and I sure as HELL did thank him for teh great years at OSU, specifically the 2003 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

First up, we have a fine looking comp, "Fast Product-Mutant Pop 78-79 (1980), features mutlipel tracks from The Mekons, Scars, The Human League, 2-3, the Flowers, and Gang of Four....correcting what I said earlier, I DID listen to this one and it's cool, looked it up and it's a group of obscure 7"'s from Fast Product Records, the highlight for me being the alternate versions of "future" Gang of Four classics, "Anthrax", "Damaged Goods", and "Armalite Rifle"......also always love discovering a "new" act from that era, and I was, until now unfamiliar with 2-3, the Scars, and the Flowers, all of whom certainly merit a listen, I found the Scars especially appealing.

before.....if you don't know him, Johnson is a fine blues singer/guitarist who is best known for his work with Dr. Feelgood in the 70's.....always great fun to hear his rumbling guitar work, scanning the tracklist by eyeball, I see "Wooly Bully" makes an appearance, can't recall for sure hearing him take on that classic before, should be fun!

Now, for something in the "anything goes" spirit in which I try to keep the blog, a spirit which Dave Sez understands completely...Rites of Strings, from whom I have never heard a note, taken from Chapiteau de Maricac, Jazz A Maricac, France, July 30 2007......the trip consists of Violinist Jean Luc Ponty, with whom we are likely all familiar and has created some tremendous sounds over the years, guitarist Al Di Meola, and double bassist Stanley Clarke.....I know about as much about jazz as I know about playing 3-D Chinese Scrabble, however, I do know this: I trust fully in Dave Sez' judgement, and, also, I have always enjoyed what I've heard of Ponty, who at times used to get some play on some of the free-est form rock stations back in those late great 70's.....I will be listening to this one within the hour, betting it's quality, and I'd like YOU to check into it as well......and let me and "provider" Dave Sez know your thoughts on it, and to everyone, I WELCOME CONTRIBUTIONS LIKE THIS, anythime......

A Radio One In Concert performance, recorded at Paris Theatre in London on 30th May 1984 and broadcast on 5th June. Spot-on FM. For those unacquainted, LKJ is a poet, whose gigs involve his rhythmic recitals, over a dub background provided by Dennis Bovell's band and music. The band for this performance was:

Richard Lloyd - Stock Audio (c. 2012, 320)
Stock audio is music that has been created for use as background music for videos, films, television, etc. Lloyd has produced a set of stock music himself, and it’s not just instrumental background rumblings either, as much of this material comes in the form of structured song composition with vocals. As far as I know, none of this material has ever been on any album and seems to have first been made available in 2012, though we have no idea when it was actually recorded.

A sad note, I just wanted to say that the guy I spoke about (Stooges post, several months back), my longtime "drifter" friend, on Wedensday night actually tried to jump between the cars of a train which started, he tripped, his leg was cut off, and he was dragged by the train....he lived, but the prognosis is not good, I don't think he'll make it........he lived a kind of a storybook life, and a more "fitting" ending couldn't have been written in Hollywood. Hope he makes it, but it seems VERY unlikely.

One of the saddest things about getting old is watching the people you've known for 30-35 years check out......I'm not the biggest "prayer" guy in the world, but in this case it seems like the best option.

Next up we have a couple of my favorite type of contributions......Andrea Barlotti, guitarist for the great Italian Kyuss-style stoner rockers Herba Mate whose debut I posted last week, emails me and informs me that his band Herba Mate has released a new split with Fatso Jetson (I have a bunch of Fatso Jetson, and may even do a post on them tomorrow).....anyway, most generous of Andrea who "gets it", wants MORE listeners for his band, and they DO rock the hell out (for my memory so do Fatso on), so this should be a fine split......generously, Andrea contributes a link for us:

Also got a kind email from the French band Blondstone haven't heard it yet, but THIS IS ALSO what I want....lesser-known bandswho come to me will be given the same respect as would, say Led Zeppelin, I want them ALL to be heard.....Blondstone gives us a Bandcamp link to their album "Mass Solace",  this MAY be a streaming-only link, they sent me one with a private download code, so I will snatch it up and if it's as good as all that, I'll put up a copy....meantime, download the stream and give it a chance, again, they WANT us to hear their music, so let's take a free opportunity to do so......please report back if you hear this before I do!

I have also received an email from a band called A Cat....they call themselves a digi-rock-techno-dream-afrodisco band (indeed) fromTel-Aviv, Israel..ok then. they have their new single sale on Itunes, I wish they would provide us all with a free copy to evaluate (they sent me one which I have not heard yet), but they do offer up you guys Youtube and  SoundCloud preview options, you can at least see what you think of them....my PREFERENCE is always that new bands provide a least a little "something" to everyone for free, my opinion is the exposure is more valuable than the income generated, but that is just me......I will respect the wishes of any bad who comes here looking for exposure.

Although I don't think it is out yet, Blair Kodman sends us an email to tell us that the recently profiled Heavy Glow DO IN FACT have a new album coming out.......I had no idea if they were still at it or not, see my Heavy Glow post of a few weeks back.....he provides this information on thier upcoming release:  heavyglowmusic.com

In case you missed it, Marcan from France provided us a link to Arc Of Ascent's hard to locate second disc "The Higher Key", I snatched mine right up coz I LOOOOVE me some Arc of Ascent (Datura, Jr.)......if you are as big a Datura fan as myself (unlikely)or enjoyed my Arc of Ascent post a couple weeks ago, you DO want to hear this.....trust me, from one of the (still) mos underappreciated stoner-metal bands on our planet.....

OK, ALL GOOD.....the legend that IS DAVE SEZ is in a reggae mood today, I LOOOOVE me some reggae, but AM BY NO MEANS AN EXPERT, which makes this tremedously interesting and gret for me.....I'm gonnalet Dave Sez use his own words etc here, after I tell you what we got...first of all we have Linton Kwesi Johnson 1984 at the Paris Theater, an artist I am but minimally familiar with, so, thusly, I CANNOT wait to hear this on tomorrow's morning commute......as if that were not enough, Dave Sez ALOS very generously contributes a wondeful live set from Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, I have heard this one and it is the absolute SHIT, you guys WANT THIS PERFROMANCE, trust me.......As Dave Sez prefers that I use his text for description, which I am VERY happy to oblige, see the following for any details on these fine performances.......

I just want to say thanks to Dave  Sez, as usual, but also to the others who have contriuted to this post...the Angel City stuff is really THOROUGH, and I LOVE when a band (Herba Mate) turns up and actually understands that I am trying to get MORE listeners for them!   also the bands who are sending me stuff......KEEP IT COMING.....I would rather post stuff like that than another, say Sleater Kinney boot, and do not take that wrong I LOVE SLEATER KINNEY BOOTS, but I have done a couple hundred of them......NEW STUFF, DIFFERENT STUFF, THAT is what we like to be about here......love all my readers/listeners, but ESPECIALLY those who contribute and UNDERSTAND what we are trying to do here......some don't, I fear, but here is no helping them......our mission is twofold.....1) help MUSIC LOVERS try to complete their "perfect" music collection, as best we can, and 2) introduce everyone to some NEW AND DIFFERENT sounds that they may not otherwise get to hear.......I love it that some bands (Herba Mate for example) actually understand that  WANT TO HELP, NOT HINDER their careers......an again, thanks so muchto Dave Sez, one ofthe blog's all-time finest contributors, these reggae gems, and for everything else too....wish I ahde more like you brother, it would be fab......here are the texts for Dave Sez' newest posts, thanks again my brother:

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Acton Town Hall, 15th November 2002 (FLAC)
From the Dave Sez archive: On the ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ tour in November 2002, Joe included this benefit gig for the members of the striking Fire Brigades Union. Mick Jones was in the audience and joined Joe onstage for the last three songs, the first time the two had shared a stage since their last performance together in the Clash in 1983. Originally a fan club only release, the CD is now out of print and has taken on legendary and essential status for all Clash fans, as the sound quality and mix are superb.  It is a fine memento from Joe’s final tour deserving a permanent official release. Joe died from an undiscovered congenital heart defect just over a month later on 22nd December 2002.
