Part 2 of Jonder's Collection of Iggy Collaborations

(Scott)-Once again this evening, I am planning on posting quite a bit of good stuff for you, my plan of
slacking off once I returned to work didn't quite go anything like that, for a variety of reasons. In the lead off slot ala Rickey Henderson (it's a BASEBALL reference for gawd's sake!) is one of our splendid regulars, following up his previously posted set of Iggy Pop collaborations with this, which spotlights Mr. Osterburg taking on various other genres......things are about to get strange.......
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a sophisticated side to Iggy Pop.  He is fond of jazz, and speaks French.  He has recorded readings of William S. Burroughs, Walt Whitman, and Edgar Allen Poe.  He has done voice work for the film Persopolis, an opera about the Manson Family, and the TV show Lil' Bush.   And he has lent his rich baritone to a surprising variety of other artists' songs.

Thanks to my Grow Bored bro Brian for "We Have All The Time In The World",  part of Brian's cool James Bond compilation, which you can still download here:growboredbigscott62.blogspot.com/2016/03/brian-strikes-back-with-james-bond-007.html.

Thanks to left-and-to-the-back.blogspot.com for the Upholstered Eldorados track.  A commenter suggested the Raindogs track, and ihatethe90s.blogspot.com found it for me.  Thank you both!  "Dance Of The Freaks" starts with a verse from a "pimp toast" of the same name, which Iggy repeats mid-song.  If you want to know more about the oral tradition of toasts, here is a link to the book "Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me":  tinyurl.com/GitchaA

I shortened "Nothin But Time", a painfully long Cat Power song from her breakup album, Sun.  She wanted David Bowie to sing on it, and she was clearly going for a "Heroes" vibe, but the Ig got the gig.

Iggy has also appeared on records by the reunited New York Dolls, Kesha, The Cult, Jemina Pearl, Was Not Was, Joe Jackson, Hole, Bill Laswell, Mogwai, and (of course) David Bowie.  This is my second set of Iggy guest spots.  The first was posted here:  growboredbigscott62.blogspot.com/2016/06/jonders-iggy-collaborations-post.html

Jon S submits an Iggy Pop video

(scott)-Iggy continues to dominate this blog, hell, i have LONG AGO posted all MY iggy/stooges stuff, but there's always room for more Ig, at least the readership seems to think so, so here is a video performance, submitted by Jon S, this being a 2016 show.....I don't often post vidoes here, but really have no good reason for that, so enjoy the hell out of it!

Jonder's Iggy collaborations post

(scott)-Lots of folks have weighed in on Iggy here, seems on right that blog regular Jonder comes up with an
original concept, a series of collaborations that Mr. Osterburg has done with others, as well as a handfull of covers.....great stuff, this needed to be documented somewhere, personally I've always thought his collaboration with Peaches ("Kick It") was fab, and Black Flag, Buckethead, Boss Martians, and basically everyone here seems like a perfect compliment to Iggy.....keep in mind this is only part ONE (of two) and all thanks to Jonder for this fine piece of work!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iggy Pop has collaborated with a surprising range of artists during the past 25 years.  Here are some of his guest appearances, as well as tracks from tribute albums.  I've got another set of Iggy collaborations coming, which will feature Mr. Pop's forays into jazz, blues, electronic and world music.

Today's set focuses on the rock songs.  They're not all great, but if you're an Iggy fan you gotta hear "Mars Is For Martians" and his wicked version of  "Sookie Sookie".

We Are The Lilies is a project that involved Sergio Dias from the Brazilian group Os Mutantes.  The BPA is another alias for Fatboy Slim, and "Superfrank" is a remix of a Monochrome Set cover ("He's Frank").

I combined Iggy's two songs with At The Drive In:  his surrealistic spoken intro to "Enfilade" segues into the blistering "Rolodex Propaganda".  I also shortened "Post Office Buddy" (sorry, Buckethead fans).

IGGY ROCKS:  tinyurl.com/1ggyRox

01 Mars Is For Martians (with the Boss Martians)
02 If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up (Betty Davis cover with the Zig Zags)

04 Miniskirt Blues (with the Cramps)
05 Punkrocker (with the Teddybears)
06 Superfrank (BPA remix of Monochrome Set cover)
07 Why? (with We Are The Lilies)
08 Let's Boot And Rally (with Bethany Consentino from Best Coast)
09 Sookie Sookie (Don Covay cover)
10 We're All Gonna Die (with Slash)
11 Fix Me (Black Flag cover)
12 Post Office Buddy (with Buckethead)
13 Enfilade intro/Rolodex Propaganda (with At The Drive-In)
14 Black Sunshine (with White Zombie)

Jon S presents This Is Iggy Pop

(Scott)-A little while back I posted a few of Iggy's earlier solo albums, and stated my lack of knowledge
post-"New Values".....a LOT of  people shared their opinions on this topic, and now Jon S checks in with his.......I still haven't heard this material, but I should in the next couple of days......thanks Jon S, and anyone else with any post-1980 or so Iggy stuff is welcome to check in......
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott, if you look at the comments for your recent Iggy Pop post, you'll notice there are others who feel the same as I do about Zombie Birdhouse. In some senses, I could even say its my favorite; its certainly like nothing else he has done. Here is the deluxe version with live versions of the album along with other "classic" tracks.

Included here is Live In San Francisco 1981, both in video form (360p - slightly higher grade can be found on youtube - but this is worth a watch as this is Iggy at his Iggiest) and separate mp3s. With him is a volatile band that rocks the shit out of every track. This tour was to promote Party but it was just before Zombie Birdhouse and one can sense where his head was at at the time.

You didn't mention the new album - Post Pop Depression - and I don't know if you've heard it, so here it is, along with a great recording of a recent show. The band is really smokin' and along with tracks from the new one are songs from The Idiot and Lust For Life.

Some of Iggy at his best -

Rare Stooges

The other day when posting the early Iggy Pop solo albums, I remembered that long ago I had a 45 rpm of a totally slamming song, "Gimme Some Skin".....I have no idea what ever happened to it and asked for assistance in the comment section.....Mr. Dave comes through this time, providing a crispy copy of the EP "I'm Sick of You".

Aside from "Gimme Some Skin", this also includes the awesome title track (believe it or not, I had forgotten completely about this tune), and other stuff like "Tight Pants" and "I Got a Right".....I don't think I've ever owned a copy of this one, actually, so I'm guessing it is fairly hard to obtain.

Thanks a million to Mr. Dave for this one, any Stooges fan will want to have this one on the shelf!

I'M SICK OF YOU-01 I'm Sick of You/02 Tight Pants/03 I Got a Right/04 Johanna/05 Consolation Prizes/06 The Scene of the Crime/07 Gimme Some Skin/08 Jesus Loves the Stooges

Thanks again to Mr.Dave, this is a great submission!

Iggy Pop's Early Solo LP's

I know Iggy has been at it forever, I don't think (not positive) that I've ever heard of anything post-new
values, and I DO know that I don't have any (likely COULD find them on the Bay but I'm not sure of what to expect......anyone with KNOWLEDGE of the post-(original) Stooges Iggy Pop stuff, let me know if it's worth my while), so today I will give you the four albums I DO know, and we'll take it from there.

After the Stooges imploded, Iggy recorded "Kill City" with James Williamson.....it's a rough sounding album, blusier than the previous Stooges classics, and I think in general somewhat underrated.....there are some other sounds on here, other than the standard guitar/bass/drums, there are, at various times, there are some keyboard parts, some sax, etc......if one thinks of this as a great lost Stooges album, one would be amiss, but to think of it as its own piece of work one would be fine.

In 1977 Iggy released "The Idiot", produced by David Bowie whose influence is all over the album. It's a polarizing album, many love it, many hate it......barely hard rocking at all, it does have some charming stuff ("Sister Midnight", "Nightclubbing", "Dum Dum Boys")......I find it to be just OK, but you gotta give the boy a point for trying.

"Lust For Life" was released the same year......Bowie produced again, and I personally find it the best of this cluster of albums.....the title track is so well known nowadays it is used in advertising (if you'd have told me THAT in 1977, I'd have asked the name of your dealer), but it really IS a good song. Better still is the lesser-known "Turn Blue", in particular the "Jesus......this is Iggy" portion of the track.

Finally my senior year in high school he released "New Values"....it's surprisingly good, with frantic tracks "I'm Bored", "Five Foot One", and "Billy Is a Runaway"......there are other good ones here, too, and if your familarity ends with "Lust for Life" or whatever, you may find this the most Stooges-like of this foursome (James Williamson produced).

OK Iggy has released about a zillion albums since, and as I said, I honestly don't recall ever hearing any of them....I checked the Bay, and there are a bunch of them there, but someone tell me which are good and which suck, please, and maybe we'll post a few more and I'll learn something. Until then........

KILL CITY-01 Kill City/02 Sell Your Love/03 Beyond the Law/04 I Got  Nothing/05 Johanna/06 Night
Theme/07 Night Theme (Reprise)/08 Consolation Prizes/09 No Sense of Crime/10 Lucky Monkeys/11 Master Charge

THE IDIOT-01 Sister Midnight/02 Nightclubbing/03 Funtime/04 Baby/05 China Girl/06 Dum Dum Boys/07 Tiny Girls/08 Mass Production

LUST FOR LIFE-01 Lust For Life/02 Sixteen/03 Some Weird Sin/04 The Passenger/05 Tonight/06 Success/07 Turn Blue/08 Neighborhood Threat/09 Fall In Love With Me

NEW VALUES-01 Tell Me a Story/02 New Values/03 Girls/04 I'm Bored/05 Don't Look Down/06 The Endless Sea/07 Five Foot One/08 How Do You Fix a Broken on part/09 Angel/10 Curiosity/11 African Man/12 Billy Is a Runaway

So here ya go.....and if anyone has advice about the many later releases, as I said, I can get them with a click but don't really want to in cases they suck.

Stooges Complete Funhouse Sessions

I'm surprised to learn that I have never put these up before, I don't think they are terribly common......you gotta LOVE you some Stooges to be wanting this, as there are SEVEN (!) discs of rough studio work as well as a bunch of random studio chatter, "Fun House" is one of my fave albums, and to me it is of great interest to get behind the scenes of the creation of that masterpiece.....for some of you, this will be a Godsend, to others, this may sound like an excessive exercise in jibberish....both side would be correct, imo.

This is a TRUE picture of the making of  a classic album.....every mistake, every studio discussion, every EVERYTHING that went down while the Stooges were creating "Fun House" is here......it's highly unlikely that you aim to listen to this on your next long road trip, this is one of those efforts that is FAR more a scholarly/informational effort than something just to kick back to......but when it comes to my fave bands (ala the Stooges), every note is something that interests ME.

OK, dig it, this is ONLY for fans of the Stooges.....it DOCUMENTS the making of one of the great albums of the 1970's, I just want to make clear to the dabblers that this is NOT something for you to tap your toes/play "air-guitar" to, this shit is rough, and personally, I find it interesting as hell....I wish I had discs of some of my other fave albums laid out in this manner...

I'm for sure NOT gonna discuss each disc, the track lists below will explain it to you EXACTLY......but if you are a fan of the Stooges, a fan of "making the record" documentation, or even just a fan of "off-the-beaten-path" recordings, I think I would recommend this to you. There are some fine, hard rocking (fuck, it's the goddamn STOOGES shit here, and I hope that this is something that some, at least, of the minions find to be a treasure strike....as always, TELL ME what you feel about my posts....I can only make this blog what YOU want it if you give me YOUR input, and I am dead serious.....if you think this post, and posts like it, sucks, then you have no one to blame should you not tell me. Right?

Do you guys like this type of thing, or am I wasting my time? Is this too "scholarly", for lack of a better term? I have always liked this set, found it fascinating as hell, BUT if the readers don't, it does me no good to post stuff like this up......PLEASE comment, as you know, I want to make this blog into something that helps EVERYONE to acquire their PERFECT music collection.....if stuff like this is less interesting to YOU than it is to ME, the only way I'll know that is if you'd tell me.

A Jonder DOUBLE covers-project set

(Scott)-This one is pretty amazing, Jonder has done cover version-albums TWICE of the Stooges great second album "Funhouse".... you have been enjoying these, my own 18-year old is (supposedly) working on a covers-only version of the Pixie's "Surfer Rosa" (did I raise him right or what?), but he's taking his good ol' 18-year-old time doing it.......anyway, layoff looms soon for me, and I plan on doing a few of these myself on some of my favorite albums, I doubt, however, that they will be as great as those already submitted........please keep them coming.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS AIN'T NO FUNHOUSE - a homemade covers compilation

01. DOWN ON THE STREET - Pig Destroyer/ 02. LOOSE - Buick MacKane/ 03. TV EYE - Radio Birdman, 04. DIRT - Neneh Cherry and The Thing/ 05. 1970 - Monster Magnet/ 06. NO FUN (HOUSE) - Sour Jazz/ 07. FUNHOUSE - Red Giant/ 08. FREAK (TAKE 2) - The Stooges

Funhouse is IMHO one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded. I compiled a Funhouse covers album about ten years ago for another blog, and have updated it for my friends here at Grow Bored with some more recent finds, such as Red Giant's passionate take on the title track, and Pig Destroyer's pummelling "Down On The Street". I also found a real surprise: Neneh Cherry singing "Dirt" with The Thing, a group of Swedish jazz musicians who got together to play the music of Neneh's father, Don Cherry.

Buick MacKane was a short-lived band formed by Alejandro Escovedo shortly after the breakup of the True Believers. This mach speed live performance of "TV Eye" by Radio Birdman incorporates lyrics from the Chocolate Watchband and briefly segues into "Looking At You" by the MC5. Dave Wyndorf changes a few words in Monster Magnet's version of "1970" but redeems himself with his wah-wah wizardry.

"No Fun (House)" isn't exactly a cover, but Sour Jazz borrows the "Funhouse" bassline and some Iggy-inspired vocals The song is excerpted from the Sour Jazz album "Lost For Life". With "LA Blues" I had the same question that Brian faced with the Velvets' "The Gift" -- who would cover it? "Freak" was the Stooges' original title for "LA Blues", and this alternate take is from The Complete Funhouse Sessions. The Stooges reportedly claimed that "LA Blues" was a Nico cover!

Other than "LA Blues", I found so many good covers that I did another set.

AIN'T NO MORE FUNHOUSE

01. DOWN ON THE STREET - The Ridiculous Trio/ 02. LOOSE - The Blake Babies/ 03. TV EYE - Scott Morgan's Powertrane 04. O.D. CATASTROPHE - Spacemen 3/ 05. DIRT - Ec8or/ 06. 1970 - Flesh For Lulu/ 07. FUNHOUSE - Steve Mackay, Mike Watt & Estel/ 08. TV EYE - John Zorn and Yamatsuka Eye

The Ridiculous Trio exclusively performs Stooges covers on trombone, tuba and drums. Hear more Ridiculous Trio at archive.org/details/Plays_The_Stooges-2680 and at slovenly.bandcamp.com/album/ridiculous-trio-tv-eye-b-w-not-right-ep

Juliana Hatfield sings "Loose" with the Blake Babies and samples of Iggy's voice. "TV Eye" is a live version with Ron Asheton on lead guitar, Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) on rhythm, and Detroit legend Scott Morgan on vocals. Spacemen 3 essentially rewrote "TV Eye" as "O.D. Catastrophe". "Dirt" is performed by the digital hardcore duo Ec8or, and Flesh For Lulu tear it up on a live "1970".

Steve Mackay, who played sax on the original Funhouse album, revisits the title tune with Irish band Estel, and Mike Watt sits in on bass. Mackay died last month, and singer/guitarist Nick Marsh from Flesh For Lulu also died this year. Rest in peace, all you Funhouse Stooges: Steve Mackay, Ron and Scott Asheton, and Dave Alexander.

Again, what to do about "LA Blues"? This time I substituted a chaotic "TV Eye" performed by Boredoms' vocalist Yamatsuka Eye and avant-garde saxophonist John Zorn, as it seemed to match the spirit of Mackay's sax damage and Iggy's wordless howls in "LA Blues".

Perhaps the best homemade comps, ever

(SCOTT)-Brian created these fantastic comps, featuring covers of material from The Velvet
Underground and the Stooges....if you have,in general, enjoyed the music I have featured here I have to think you are going to love these, I do......Brian's text follows, I really don't have much to add, other than Mott the Hoople's "Sweet Jane" was a huge favorite of mine as a teen, and I always thought Nirvana's take on "Here She Comes Now" scorched the original which is saying something...please comment, I'm sure a lot of work went into these and it shows......and of course I would be thrilled if these inspire you to create a similar covers project on one of your favorite bands that I would share here......something from me over the weekend, but thanks to Brian for these two excellent efforts.....
__________________________________________________________________________________

Hello all. Got an interesting treat for you music nuts out there. I went on a bender lately looking on MP3 sites and in my collection for good cover songs. After putting together quite a few, I realized I had enough for a post of covers of my two favorite bands - V.U. and the Stooges. Even the most knowledgable of you may find some surprises in here....(P.S. - funny stuff at the end of the post too!)

Someone - maybe Lou - once said that while nobody may have bought VU's albums back in the day, everyone that did started a band. This shows that to be true. I've put together two files of covers to simulate Nico and White Light, and also a third one containing versions of songs from the other two albums.

While there are some unknown names in here, everyone gives a great performance. I had to dig to find a good cover of "Heroin"...I didn't want to include Billy Idol's Cyberpunk version...and Clem Snide's solo take is great - stark and wistful. Please go check his Bandcamp page. And whoever Adam Green is, he does a pretty version of "I'll Be Your Mirror".

R.E.M.'s cuts come from Dead Letter Office. I always thought their "There She Goes Again" was a perfect match. I believe Bowie's versions are from Bowie At the Beeb. I love how his vocals go from deadpan to Ziggy in the middle of "Waiting For My Man". And the guitar tone is great.
The CD6's version of "Venus In Furs" is fucking unhinged! Sexy, menacing, awesome...Dukowski was in Black Flag, for you younguns who may not know.

I don't know who Bettie Serveert is, but that live version of "Black Angel's Death Song" is amazing. I was surprised somebody covered it. "All Tomorrow's Parties" comes from an unknown album. It's stellar, almost chamber music, and Crystal Hall's vocals sell it. And look! Echo & the Bunnymen doing "Run Run Run" live! Pretty well, too. And Half Japanese gloriously mangles "European Son" to lead us out...

TRACKLIST

1. Nina Hagen - Sunday Morning
2. David Bowie - Waiting For My Man
3. R.E.M. - Femme Fatale
4. Chuck Dukowski Sextet - Venus In Furs
5. Echo & The Bunnymen - Run Run Run
6. Jazz Mafia ft. Crystal Monae Hall - All Tomorrow's Parties
7. Clem Snide - Heroin
8. R.E.M. - There She Goes Again
9. Adam Green - I'll Be Your Mirror
10. Bettie Serveert - The Black Angel's Death Song
11. Half Japanese - European SonG

White Light/White Heat proved a bit more problematic. Bowie gives a great glammy, crunchy version of the title track, but who in the hell has ever covered "The Gift"? Big Scott and I joked about it. Well, I found them....it's a Japanese group called Hellivision. They do mostly without Waldo's story, yet they deliver a grooving, feedback-drenched version of the song. Go check them out on YouTube. This was ripped from a live video of them playing in a bar in Japan. Modern technology is great, huh?

I don't know who does this great "Lady Godiva's Operation", but it screams 80's UK indie music to me. Anybody got a clue? Big Scott hipped me to Nirvana's great cover of "Here She Comes Now" from the Smart Sessions. It's great... should've been on one of the main albums. Half Japanese comes back for a paper-thin raveup of "I Heard Her Call My Name". And then we have "Sister Ray"... I almost put Doctor Mix & the Remix's version here, but I couldn't resist putting both Joy Division and New Order doing the song, especially since put together they equal the original track's running time. JD's version is from Still...I don't know what album the New Order version is on.

The remainder of VU covers make up the second file. It's mostly names that are unfamiliar, but some great versions. I deliberately left out Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane" (everybody has it) and included Mott the Hoople's version instead....thanks Scott. NOTE: IF ANYBODY KNOWS WHO THE UNKNOWNS ARE, LET ME KNOW. I can't reply to your comments, but I can see them. And if you know any other VU covers, that'd be cool too.

This next one I'm even prouder of. I was aware of several Stooges covers, but had no idea how many more I would find. Some of you may know the 90's Iggy tribute album We Will Fall. While there's a few good tracks on it, I deliberately avoided sourcing from it. (It can be found easily enough if you want it.) Many of these are live cuts, sound check stuff, or are off albums and EPs. Now look at this track list....

1. The Mission - 1969

2. Joan Jett - I Wanna Be Your Dog
3. Sex Pistols - No Fun
4. The Feelies - Real Cool Time
5. Spacemen 3 - Little Doll
6. Slayer - I'm Gonna Be Your God
7. SWANS - I Want To Be Your Dog
8. Rage Against the Machine - Down On the Street
9. The Birthday Party - Loose
10. Wylde Ratttz (w Mark Arm) - T.V. Eye
11. Magnolia Strip - Dirt
12. Mission Of Burma - 1970
13. The Birthday Party - Funhouse
14. Wylde Ratttz (w Ewan McGregor) - T.V. Eye
15. Rocket From the Tombs - Search & Destroy
16. Wylde Ratttz (w Ewan McGregor) - Gimme Danger
17. Thrust - Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell
18. No Man's Land - Penetration
19. Yo La Tengo - Raw Power
20. John Mellencamp - I Need Somebody
21. The Girlies - Tight Pants
22. Soundgarden - Search & Destroy
23. The Ridiculous Trio - Scene Of the Crime/Death Trip
24. The 69 Eyes - Gimme Some Skin
25. Screamin' Eric - Cock In My Pocket
26. Harem Scarem - Open Up and Bleed

There's a mix for you, huh? I won't talk about every song, but I do want to lay out the highlights for you. Like the VU, I put these in the order they are in on the albums. In the case where there's different versions, they're put after that particular batch of songs. Though its in two parts, when you upload it, it'll join together as one big ass rock and roll album!

For nervy post-punkers, The Feelies jangle the hell out of "Real Cool Time". Also there's Spacemen 3 doing "Little Doll" by way of Hawkwind. It kicks ass!

The Birthday Party tracks may be familiar from my Nick Cave rarities post months ago. That "Funhouse" is off the rails! Joan Jett's stomping "Dog" is from her '88 Up Your Alley album. It should've been a single. Slayer's version (with different lyrics) is from their unappreciated covers album, while SWANS' funereal version is from the Children Of God period. Each one has a different feel - from candy coated weekend fun, to brutal sexual domination, to masochistic surrender.

One of the more famous covers, the Sex Pistol's "No Fun" (taken from the remastered Bollocks) might be their best ever track - it's not snotty, it's seething and angry, with Rotten's vocals at their rawest! Even The Mission (a mopey band I never really cared for) do a great live version of "1969", giving it just enough madness and ennuì. Rage Against the Machine doing "Down On the Street"...how great is that? They fit perfectly. What is that track off of?

Now, the Wylde Ratttz songs are from the movie Velvet Goldmine. They are basically The Stooges behind Ewan McGregor's Iggy. And it's no studio guys...the band is made up of people like Mike Watt, Ron Asheton, Steve Shelley, Thurston Moore...you don't see them in the movie, but they play the music. Because of release issues back in '98, there's two versions of "T.V. Eye" - one with Mark Arm from Mudhoney singing, and one with McGregor. I've also included a good quality audio rip of the "Gimme Danger" performance that's in the movie. It was never on the soundtrack CD.
Rocket From the Tomb's "Search & Destroy" might be my favorite cover version of the song - certainly better than the Chili Pepper's. And I only just discovered Soundgarden's live version. Mission Of Burma take great advantage of the squall of "1970", Yo La Tengo rip up "Raw Power", John Fucking Mellencamp covers "I Need Somebody"! Never knew he was so hip, huh? It's a great version, too. He did it a long time ago from the sound of it. The Ridiculous Trio is that one album I put up awhile ago...greasy, loud Stooges instrumentals - you can't beat it!

Some of the names you don't recognize are from Hard to Beat, an Australian compilation of Stooges covers. It's pretty rare, so I had to source the songs from rips of YouTube videos. There's a little bit of compression on them, but the tracks sound good. It was a zip on a blog somewhere, but that guy literally died....no asking for a re-up there!

I enjoyed putting these together, and hopefully I made something you haven't heard. Give them a listen. Spread them around. If you have a blog of your own, borrow my links. It's cool.

And as a funny bonus to those who miss that stuff, there's a link for this guy....

It's a two album link. It's a partial repost, because the one track was corrupted before. There's his first album (the file should work perfectly this time), and also a funny album of his from the 2000s. I gotta be vague, folks. Enjoy all this. Give the comps some love. They were fun to put together.

By "semi-request", unquestionably the best Stooges post EVER (part 1)

See, it's like this.....I have an old friend, one of "drifter" types.....we go back about 35 years or so, and

he's one of those guys you'd write a "most unforgettable character" essay about.....I mean, for real.....the guy has probably the highest IQ of anyone I've ever known, but chose to be a burnout/junkie/bum.....a kind of drugged out "Good Will Hunting" in a sort of a way. Anyway, the last few years, he's been drifting into our lives every couple years or so, living all over the country, scrounging for dope/beer money. It's a sad story, really, if you knew the guy back in his 20's you'd have been amazed at the mind he had, and now as he approaches 60.......well, he is pathetic, his mind is basically gone.....

He showed up at our house the other day, pretty much right on schedule (I think it had been a couple years since his last appearance)......the guy IS an old friend, despite his shortcomings, we drank some beers and listened to some music (he's always been awed by my music collection, a lot of my vinyl in fact I obtained from him years ago when he sold his turntable for....well, whatever).....anyway, his favorite band was ALWAYS the Stooges, a perfect fit. I broke out some Stooges, maybe "Raw Power" and "Metallic KO" or something, and I was amazed by JUST HOW MUCH Stooges shit I have.....and I have never done a "Best Ever" post on them. But I get ahead of myself.....

My friend is a complete computer illiterate, I was
trying to show him this blog, I guess he was semi-impressed, as much as he can be...... we were looking at some of my OLD posts, Dictators, MC5, Velvet Underground, Pink Fairies, stuff like that, and he says, "Lemme see the STOOGES!".....I had really thought I had done one, but upon checking, nope. He will never see this, as he has never been on a computer in his life (also has never used a cell phone, an IPod, you get the idea), but there is one thing......

He's in poor health, with all the drugs and alcohol he has ingested it is amazing he is walking the earth still.....we are ALL getting older, MANY of my old friends are gone now, and I think (he alluded to it as well) that this is probably the last time I will see him. I think that is probably accurate.

I don't want to mention his name, as it would be of no meaning.....but as long time friends, I think I owe it at least to the memories we share to do the absolute best post on the legendary Stooges that a person could possibly do......

Dedicated to "my friend", perhaps you have seen
such a sad case in your life as well.......I wish you well, my friend, and PERHAPS we will see each other again......if not in this life, then, well......

OK. The great Stooges. Had I not physically checked I would never have guessed how much shit I have by them, rarites, boots, LOTS of stuff......today, for part 1, let us get the "legit" stuff out of the way, and I'll throw on some rarities too, then tomorrow, ALL rare stuff OK?

The Stooges did not make "great" albums, necessarily.....they had to be experienced live (I SO wish I could have seen them, videos and etc are at times incredible!)....the problem with their albums was that SOMETIMES the "rockers" didn't really "blast off" as they did live, and sometimes the "dirges" could be, honestly, flat out boring......however, when it worked......the first, self titled album opens with a pair of drop dead classics, "1969" (some of the most lethal wah-wah ever recorded) and "I Wanna Be Your Dog", other stuff is worth a listen, but those two tunes are the fucking shit. Second album "Fun House" has but ONE classic, the knock-you-over "Down on the Street" (maybe "TV Eye" also I guess). The third, and final studio LP gives us two MORE classic rockers, "Search and Destroy" and the title track "Raw Power".....

So, that is the Stooges "Official" output...but there is so much more. They released a legendary live
LP "Metallic KO" that sounds like absolute sludge, BUT does encapsulate the Stooges killer live shows pretty well.....the classic ending of "Louie Louie" : "Thank very much to the person who threw this glass bottle at my head, ya nearly killed me but ya missed again, so ya gotta keep trying".....and you hear more bottles breaking. Awesome. Now, later on, a 2 disc CD version of "Metallic KO" was issued, with a different track sequence and some added material ("Search and Destroy" and some others). I do not like it. I MUCH prefer the vinyl version, the sequencing is all wrong on the CD set (for me) but I will include BOTH versions and let you decide for yourself (and I want to know what you think, too, please)

OK for today's rare stuff.....let's go with the four disc "You Don't Want My Name, You Want My Action", a series of four 1971 concert recordings....sometimes the sound can be almost unbearable, but this i some fiercely intense music, as well as a chance to hear some Stooges concert staples that didn't make the three vinyl discs ("Who Do You Love", "Fresh Rag", "Big Time Bum", more!)....for fans ONLY, of which (obviously) I am one. For today, I will also give ya a couple more, "The 1972 Studio Sessions", again, some material not available on any of the other albums, and "Wild Love-The Detroit Rehearsals and More"), even MORE rare tracks and otherwise unheard tunes.....

We will leave it at that for today, that is a bunch of stuff, and I got just as much for tomorrow.....so
for my friend, I know you won't see this, but know that I am thinking about you.....

Perhaps you have anold friend, mind, for whom life, for whatever the reason, didn't quite go the way it should have, regardless of who was at fault (in this case he himself was, not my point)......I dedicate this and tomorrow's post to all such people, if nothing else they certainly make the boring lives of we "adults" more interesting.

Be a bit patient if you would, please....gonna take a while to get ALL THESE links up!
