A Little Something from Jonder

(SCOTT): Well, I don't THINK I messed anything up, I know I mentioned a while ago that we have a
project coming up involving The Fall..... it's Brian's project, actually, but I don't think I did him or his project any harm by mentioning it, which lead to this, the latest from Jonder....... I'll let him explain this one for ya:

--------------------------------------------------------

Scott said he had something by The Fall coming up, and I thought it would be a good time to share this. It's a collection of songs that sound (to me) like The Fall. Mark E. Smith has always claimed that other bands rip him off, and he's got a point. Pavement and Sonic Youth, among others, owe a huge debt. The very early (and rare) Deerhunter song included on this comp shows Bradford Cox fully under the spell of the Hip Priest.
It would be easy to make a compilation of low-fi bands with cheap guitars and singers who don't sing. There is a good bit of that here. But my intention isn't limited to that, nor is it to accuse any of the artists of being derivative. I enjoy all of these groups, and many of the songs here are longtime favorites of mine. I just wanted to demonstrate the influence that The Fall has exerted over the past forty years of their existence.

Some of the bands are actually contemporaries of The Fall (the Mekons, Scars and the Nightingales) rather than deadbeat descendants. Others (like Mother And The Addicts and the Leaving Trains) are bands whose other records don't sound like The Fall, and who are either paying tribute or taking the piss.

Lungfish doesn't really sound like The Fall either, but their song embodies the grotesque lyricism and the "three R's" of the Fall: repetition, repetition, repetition.

01 THE LEAVING TRAINS: Suicide Blues
02 JOCK SCOT WITH THE NECTARINE No.9: Tape Your Head On
03 EARL BRUTUS: Navyhead
04 PROLAPSE: Deanshanger
05 IKARA COLT: Panic
06 GIRLS AGAINST BOYS: Bullet Proof Cupid
07 SOUL COUGHING: St. Louise Is Listening
08 LIFTER PULLER: Manpark
09 LUNGFISH: The Words
10 POND: Hobo Rocket
11 THE IN OUT: Death By Molasses
12 THE BEATNIK FILMSTARS: New Boyfriend And Black Suit
13 THE MEKONS: Poxy Lips
14 MOTHER AND THE ADDICTS: All In The Mind
15 DEERHUNTER: Tree Spies
16 PUSSY GALORE: Alright
17 GORKY'S ZYGOTIC MYNCI: Siwt Nofio
18 BEACHBUGGY: Heavy Hitter
19 THE MEMBRANES: High Street Yanks
20 THE YUMMY FUR: Roxy Girls
21 SCARS: Adult/ery
22 THE NIGHTINGALES: How To Age

Thanks to Jonder, please keep em coming.....look soon for Brian's Fall extravaganza!

  2. Hey Hey I'm glad to see this, it looks like a fun listen. Fall-inspired bands' songs! I know a few of the bands listed quite well {Prolapse, a fave; Ikara Colt; Girls Against Boys; Deerhunter; and the beloved gone-but-not-forgotten double-drumming BEACHBUGGY!!!}, and a few others, and I'm interested to hear the rest to discern which influences from the Fall Jonder considered as the Fall do a lot of things, including calliope and merry-go-round.

  3. Ha! I guess I focused most on the "Country & Northern" aspect of the Fall, as well as the dense and noisier rock of the bands that you mentioned. Double-drumming was part of my favorite Fall era (circa Hex Enduction Hour). I've heard that The Fall is playing again with two drummers, and I wish I could afford a trip across the pond to see them in action. Hope you enjoy kicking back (Beachbuggy reference) with this mix. I am planning a Prolapse post for this blog in the near future.
